William swayed slightly, but he still wore that untouchable, arrogant expression.
“You’re rejecting me?”
“Lillian, I need a reason.”
I stood firm, my voice unwavering.
“I don’t want to be anyone’s replacement.”
“I refuse to spend my life living in someone else’s shadow.”
“I want to be myself. I deserve a love that’s mine alone.”
William cut me off. “I can make you my priority.”
I shook my head.
“Mr. Carter, anyone in this world has the right to love me–except you and James.”
“Let’s be real.”
“My heart–literally–already belongs to the woman you loved most, Sophia. I owe you nothing.”
For the first time, William’s perfect composure shattered.
Time seemed to freeze.
Then, from behind me, I heard James‘ voice–shaky, fragile.
“Lillian… when did you find out?”
I didn’t turn to look at him.
“The moment you did it, James, you should have known I’d find out eventually.”
“The truth always comes to light.”
Without another glance at the two of them, I turned and walked away.

I lost my patience.
“You both loved Sophia. So why the hell won’t you let me go?”
James clenched his jaw.
“Because you’re my wife.”
William exhaled sharply, his eyes deep and unreadable.
“I watched you grow up, Lillian. I’m not letting you disappear alone.”
The station’s announcement rang overhead. I turned away from them.

While they argued, I yanked my wrist free.
Then James took a step closer, desperation in his eyes.
“Lillian, I never got to celebrate your birthday.”
“Oh, right–you gave me a keepsake, didn’t you? I still have it. Look.”
James pulled the charm from his pocket, grinning like a child waiting for praise.
“You told me not to open it until after your birthday.”
“Let’s open it now, okay?”
He eagerly unwrapped the charm.
Then he saw the tiny folded paper inside.
And froze.
