Chapter 3

Back from the orphanage, I went to the walk–in closet to pack. I realized how few clothes I owned – only the few outfits Judith bought me when I married Caleb. My husband of four years had
never bought me a single garment.
After packing my clothes, I put all the
gifts I’d given Caleb over the years
together and called the recycling center. I
sent him a nice present every year
for his
birthday, but he’d never even glanced at
them. They were covered in dust.
As the recycling truck left, a
Maybach pulled up behind me. It was
Caleb’s younger sister, Chloe. She,
wearing a red dress, snorted at the

departing truck.“Huh, selling cardboard boxes? Typical small–town girl.”
Ignoring her, I turned to leave. Chloe
stopped me.“Hey!”
I’d always been subservient to the
Hayes family, so my indifference enraged
her.“Are you deaf? I’m talking to you!”
I shook her hand off, a flicker of
irritation in my eyes. Chloe hated me,
because she didn’t think I deserved Caleb.
I’d put up with her for four years, but
since I was free, I wasn’t going to tolerate
her anymore.
Chloe was about to continue when
she saw something and smirked.“You know what? I feel really sorry for you,
cardboard box girl. Caleb’s first love is

back, and he will definitely kick you out.”

A woman in a white dress came to us.
This was my first time seeing Olivia. She
had captivating eyes, long black hair, and
porcelain skin. Even in a simple white dress, she looked elegant and noble. Four
years of a broken marriage hadn’t left a mark on her. No wonder Caleb loved her
so much.
Olivia pulled Chloe’s arm, gently saying,“Chloe, don’t say that. She’s your
sister–in–law.”
“Sister–in–law? Olivia, I told you in
the car! You’re the only love Caleb loves and he went overseas every week to see
you. Those gifts were from him. Don’t
you see what this means?” Chloe then

ordered me, “What are you waiting for?
Take Olivia’s luggage inside! Caleb
agreed to let her stay here.”
I ignored them and went inside. Chloe stomped her foot. The driver
brought in the luggage. Just as Chloe was about to yell, Caleb hurried in. Seeing
Olivia sitting on the sofa, he breathed a sigh of relief
“Olivia’s house needs renovation, so she’ll be staying here for a few days,” he said to me.
I said nothing. Olivia stood up, uneasy.“Caleb, maybe I should leave. This
is your place and you’re married. Sarah
seems unhappy…”
Caleb stopped her.“It’s okay. Sarah is

Watching them, I smiled. “He’s right.
Olivia, make yourself at home.” This
house would eventually belong to Olivia
anyway.
