Maggie nodded and took a seat on the sofa by the coffee table.
Franklin gave an order, “Have someone bring in coffee.”
Jake replied, “Already arranged.”
As he finished speaking, Sherry knocked and entered with a tray of coffee.
She paused when she saw who was in the room. “Maggie?”
Sherry had taken over Maggie’s position after she left Wilson Group. Since then, they’d had almost no contact.
Maggie smiled and nodded. “Long time no see.”
“Long time no see,” Sherry echoed with a smile.

But the setting wasn’t right for a long chat. She placed the coffee in front of both Maggie and Franklin, then turned to leave. Just as she reached the door, as if remembering something, she turned back and reported a few work matters to Franklin.
After listening, he said, “Got it. I’ll be free this afternoon. Have him come by before three.”
“Understood.”
Sherry nodded, smiled once more at Maggie, and hurried off
Maggie stirred her coffee slowly, watching.
As the head of the secretarial department, Sherry reporting directly to Franklin was perfectly normal.
But back when Maggie had been in that position, she had been strictly limited to communicating only with his two
official secretaries.
In the two–plus years she served as team leader, she was only ever allowed into Franklin’s office to deliver coffee–and only when Chad and the others were swamped.
As for reporting work directly? Not even once.
Franklin had truly kept her at arm’s length.

Yet this cup didn’t taste like what she’d taught.
She took another sip. The flavor was a bit off, but still quite good.
When she set her cup down, she noticed Franklin also drinking his, clearly satisfied.
Back then, she had foolishly felt special because Franklin only liked the coffee she brewed.
But now she realized…
It was just coffee.
When one flavor’s gone, you move on to the next. It wasn’t that important.
Looking back, she really had been so young–naïve and ridiculous.
Her thoughts were interrupted as Franklin spoke.
“Did President Gray tell you where we left off last time?”
“He did.” Maggie pushed her memories aside and refocused on work. “We can pick up from there.”
“Alright.”
“Regarding the hybrid precision computing framework we discussed–particularly the issue at the current parameter scale–I think the proposal from your side was solid. I also have a few ideas I’d like to discuss.”
“Great.”
Maggie launched into the technical aspects, going into detail about the improvements they’d made to inference speed using their latest approach.
The conversation touched on many key technologies, all confidential within their collaborative scope.
It soon became clear that Chad and Jake were in over their heads–they couldn’t follow much of the technical talk. They simply sat there, listening quietly.
But Franklin kept pace with Maggie easily, engaging in back–and–forth dialogue.
As the discussion progressed, Chad noticed something surprising:

There was surprise in his eyes–along with appreciation.

It was a look Chad had never seen him give her before.
Moreover, while he listened attentively, there was even a smile on his lips, as though he was genuinely enjoying this
exchange.
Chad was stunned.
He wasn’t the only one. Jake saw it too–and was equally shocked.
After about an hour of discussion and idoa exchange, Professor Mark and Liam arrived.
Maggie had met Professor Mark previously.
She’d been introduced to Professor Liam the year before, during a banquet she attended with Johnny.
Professor Liam had already known then that she was Nolan’s student.
They’d chatted at length again at last year’s technology expo.
Professor Liam was well aware of Maggie’s capabilities.
He had also recently read her paper published in an academic journal.
Now, seeing her again, he greeted her warmly. “Maggie, long time no see.”
“Long time no see, Professor Liam,” she replied, shaking his hand before sitting down to get back to business.
Another hour passed as they discussed things in depth. Just as the conversation was getting lively, someone suddenly opened the door and walked in.
It was Julia.
Maggie showed no hint of surprise at the sight of her.
Seeing so many people in the room, Julia paused. “Sorry–I didn’t know you were in a meeting. I thought no one was in here, so I didn’t knock…”
Professor Mark and Liam both knew about her relationship with Franklin.
As his girlfriend, it wasn’t unusual for her to come and go without knocking.
They similed, unconcerned.
