Although Maggie and Julia both attended the seminar at Q University, there was no interaction between them throughout the day.
By around three or four in the afternoon, Maggie and Johnny were ready to leave the campus.
As Professor Liam and the university president saw them off Professor Liam extended another invitation, “There’s another seminar in the city this Saturday. I wonder if the two of you-”
At those words, Maggie paused. Her gaze happened to fall on Janice, not far away.
She looked away, pressed her lips together, and replied, “Sorry, I have something important to take care of this Saturday. I won’t be able to attend.”
After bidding farewell to Professor Liam and the university president, and once the car had pulled away from the campus, Johnny finally asked, “You seemed a little off just now. Did something happen?”
He had noticed her reaction when Saturday was mentioned and her gaze landed on Janice. With others present, he
hadn’t asked further at the time.
Maggie lowered her gaze slightly and said calmly, “Saturday is my mother’s birthday.”
Johnny’s voice caught in his throat.
The fact that her mother had been kept in a convalescent home all these years was entirely thanks to the actions of the Green and Brown families. No wonder Maggie’s expression had shifted the way it did when facing Janice and
Julia.
After a long pause, he asked, “Do you have any plans regarding the Green and Brown families?”
Maggie clenched her fists. “I don’t want them to have it easy. But-”
But they were now under the protection of Franklin. Even though Cole was doing quite well, it would still be incredibly difficult to move against them.
Even if she didn’t say it outright, Johnny understood.
He offered her comfort, “What goes around comes around. I believe you’ll get your chance. Don’t lose heart.”
Maggie nodded. “Mm.”
On Saturday, after baking a cake together with Jason and the others, Maggie drove to the convalescent home.
She hadn’t visited in a while, and Sally looked even more frail than before.

The director explained, “Over the years, Sally has been deeply repressed, with little appetite. That kind of prolonged condition has seriously damaged her health. Her immune system is almost entirely compromised.”
“Then–then-”
“We’ll need to do further tests to confirm, but at her current state, if things continue to worsen, I’m afraid-
She didn’t finish, but everyone understood what she meant.
She didn’t have much time left.
Old Madam Miller staggered and nearly collapsed.
After leaving the facility and returning home, she locked herself in her room, utterly devastated.
But no matter how heavy their hearts were, life still had to go on.
It was getting late, and though no one had much appetite, they still needed to eat.
Maggie took her phone and drove to the nearby supermarket to buy groceries.
She wandered the aisles in a daze and went to the checkout with a few items. Just as she was about to leave, a voice called out, “Cousin.”
Maggie turned around. It was Jane.
She gave her a polite nod.
Jane smiled upon seeing her but paused when she noticed Maggie’s pale complexion. “Maggie… are you okay?”

Maggie understood. She meant that Franklin was with Julia’s family that evening.
Her expression didn’t change, but her grip on the bags tightened slightly. She let out a soft “Mm,” then turned and left without another word.
That night, the atmosphere in the Miller household was heavy.
Maggie locked herself in her room, reading.
It wasn’t until almost eleven that she looked up and realized her phone had run out of battery at some point.
She plugged it in and went to take a shower.
After she came out of the bathroom and checked her phone again, she saw several missed calls.
She paused when she saw Paul’s name, then called him back first.
Paul picked up quickly. “Miss Miller, you finally answered. I just received a call from Mr. Wilson’s lawyer. He said all the paperwork regarding property matters has been finalized. You can officially proceed with the divorce.”
