That evening, just as Maggie was getting off work, she received a call from Isabella.
Tomorrow was Saturday, so Maggie figured Isabella probably wanted to meet up.
But she wasn’t free tomorrow.
She was going to the sanatorium with Old Madam Miller and the others to consult the doctor about her mother’s treatment plan.
So, she didn’t pick up Isabella’s call.
On Saturday, once they arrived at the sanatorium, Maggie noticed that Sally looked even thinner than when they had last seen her. Her hair was dry, and her face completely devoid of color.
The doctor explained, “The medication she was previously on for her mental condition can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Before, her organs could handle it, but now, with her current state of organ failure, it’s no longer suitable. So we’ve stopped some of the meds. As a result, her mental state has deteriorated, and the antibiotics
required for organ treatment are putting a heavy strain on her body…”
Maggie clenched her handbag tighter and nodded to show her understanding.
After that, she and Jason spent quite a while speaking with the doctor. It wasn’t until noon that they finally left the
sanatorium.
As they were leaving, Isabella called again.
Maggie pressed her lips together and rejected the call.
Franklin didn’t call again after that.
But that afternoon, Jessica, who had just returned from abroad the day before, called and invited her out shopping.
Maggie wasn’t in the mood. She really didn’t feel like going out, and on top of that, Old Madam Miller’s health hadn’t been great lately–she wanted to stay home and keep her company.
But Old Madam Miller gently patted the back of her hand and said, “Don’t stay còoped up. Go out and get some fresh
air.”
“…Okay,” Maggie replied.

Once they met, they chatted for a good while before Jessica learned that Sally’s health had taken a turn.
She lost all interest in her coffee and looked visibly upset. After a moment, she said softly, “Your mom… she’ll get
better. She has to.”
That was all Maggie could hope for, too.
But they all knew, deep down, that the chances were slim. Sally’s condition was deteriorating rapidly.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have asked you out-”
“It’s fine.” Maggie shook her head, just as she turned and caught sight of two familiar figures.
Her eyes instantly turned cold.
Following her gaze, Jessica saw Logan and Janice.
Sun was dressed elegantly, exuding poise and charm. Despite being nearly fifty, she looked no older than forty.
Logan also clearly paid attention to his appearance–he looked sharp and composed for a man in his fifties.
Together, they looked like the perfect couple–well–matched and affectionate.
They were dressed casually, clearly enjoying a day out together. From the looks of it, they were in excellent spirits.
Neither of them noticed Maggie and Jessica.
Logan was holding Janice’s hand, helping her carry bags and pick out clothes–like the picture–perfect husband.
Jessica’s jaw clenched as she watched, whispering angrily, “Why do they get to live so happily? The world’s so
unfair.”
Maggie looked down.
Yes. Deeply unfair.
Jessica paused, then added, “Forget them–what’s worse is Franklin still…”
Now that Maggie and Franklin were headed for divorce, things at the Brown family would probably only get better with him in the picture.
But Sally-

On Monday morning, Maggie went to Wilson Group with Johnny.
This time, they were meeting with core technical staff–Franklin wasn’t present.
After a full morning of meetings, Maggie.went to the restroom. On her way back, she saw Franklin standing with Chad at the entrance.
They were mid–conversation but stopped when they saw her
Maggie was about to walk past them when Franklin suddenly said, “Why aren’t you answering Isabella’s calls?”
She stopped and replied coldly, “Why should I?”
Franklin seemed taken aback by her response. His deep eyes studied her, but he didn’t say anything more.
