Chapter 8
Bennett came home very late.
As soon as he walked through the door, Violet approached him and asked, “Why are you coming home so late? I called you so many times, but you didn’t answer. Did you go see that girl again?”
Her tone was clearly filled with displeasure.
Violet thought to herself, “Just yesterday I told Bennett I hoped he would spend less time with that child Valentina left behind, so Dylan wouldn’t get hurt. And today he comes home this late again.”
She frowned and said, “Don’t try to fool me. I called your company, and they said you didn’t even attend the shareholders‘ meeting. Instead, you went to that girl’s school.
“Bennett, whether that girl is skipping school or dating, it’s not worth you handling personally. She’s ruining her own life. Dylan is still young and needs to feel secure with you…”
“She’s dead.” Bennett suddenly spoke, his cold voice cutting off Violet’s words.
Violet was stunned.
“Stella is dead. She died of sudden cardiac arrest.” Bennett looked at Violet, his face expressionless, his voice noticeably hoarse.

She blinked, forcing out two tears: “How could this happen?”
Bennett quietly watched Violet. Actually, Violet wasn’t an actress known for her acting skills–in fact, her acting was quite
poor.
If Bennett hadn’t invested heavily in film productions, she probably would never have become famous.
Just like now, the two tears streaming down her face only seemed utterly fake.
Bennett suddenly felt extremely tired: “I’m exhausted. I’m going to get some sleep.”
But Violet grabbed Bennett’s arm, looking somewhat panicked.
She thought to herself, “The living can’t compete with the dead. If that girl had stayed alive, Bennett probably wouldn’t have cared much about her. But dying so young, Bennett’s guilt will be magnified, and all of this will be bad for Dylan.”
Violet said, “Bennett, don’t be too upset. You were already very good to that girl. She died of heart disease–I remember Valentina had heart problems too, so she really was like Valentina.
“Actually, do you think it’s possible that because Valentina did so many terrible things back then, breaking us up, her daughter got what she deserved?”
Actually, Violet was usually quite calculating, but right now she
43 too anxious.

her, his gaze cold as ice.
“Violet,” he said in a low voice, “her name was Stella.”
Violet felt almost paralyzed under the stare of those dark eyes.
Bennett continued, “You won’t even say her name. You keep telling me she’s Valentina’s daughter. Do you know I hate Valentina, so you’re deliberately reminding me over and over?”
He had almost never shown such cold, fierce anger in front of Violet before. At this moment, Violet was completely terrified.
Bennett said nothing more and walked toward the door, leaving Violet behind.
“Bennett, Dylan said before bed that he hopes you can take him to play ball tomorrow,” Violet made one last attempt.
Her only response was the loud slam of the door being shut hard.
