Chapter 8
“Ashley’s POV
Five years have passed and it didn’t even feel that way. The morning was bright and the roads were as busy as I would have guessed them to be but in my heart, I still felt the same.
1 looked down from my window, staring at the busy streets from the highest floor of the building. I had chosen the highest floor because I was sick of people looking down on me, it was high time that I was on top and so it was.
The Mira group is now one of the largest companies, and to only think that the idea came to me just a few years ago, one would find it difficult to figure out how we have made so much success in such a short while.
I watched as people moved through the sidewalks, strangers passing each other and friends stopping for a quick chat,
But just then, the door to my office opened slowly and I turned around to see who it was.
“Good morning Ms. Ashley.” The gentle voice echoed through the room. It was Laura, my secretary. I turned around fully and walked back to my table slowly and with my eyes on her.
She was holding a tablet to her chest and was clinging onto it as though her life depended on it, swiping across the screen without any hesitation.
“Good morning, Laura.” I greeted her with a warm smile before sitting down. She was in her mid–twenties but anyone could easily mistake her for being older, even though she acted much younger than her age.
“You’re pretty early. So what do we have today?” I asked her eagerly, waiting for her response.
She smiled back and dug her face once more into the screen. I used the opportunity to look around my office, admiring how incredible it looked. Every furniture and accessory was state of the art and it was just a mild reflection of the life that I had successfully built.
“Ummm, you have a short meeting with the board in just an hour. You promised you were going to talk about the new project proposals. Then there is another brief meeting with the marketing team about the new product… and finally, there is a two–hour meeting with the board again about the unveiling of the project you’ve been working on.”
Both my eyes were closed as she spoke and I had already gotten exhausted when she got to the second thing I had to do that
day.
“Are you sure I’ll survive?” I asked her playfully.
I opened my eyes and saw that she was hesitating.
“Well everything here could be rescheduled, I think the most important thing is the meeting you have with the board… They’ve been preparing for it all week. I don’t think you can escape that one,”
I smiled at her and nodded slowly, it wasn’t a big deal after all. The company wouldn’t have been where it is now if I had kept on avoiding what needed to be done. But things were a lot different now and I just couldn’s tell what had changed.
“That sounds fine to me. You can reschedule the rest and try to them into the rest of the week. I’ll speak to the board members but not until later, do you think that works?”
Laura smiled and then nodded her head. “You’re the boss.” She said in a slightly high pitched voice before focusing on the tablet in front of her again.
“Thank you, Laura.” I said to her, “You know you deserve the pruse too, for all that we’ve done so far.”
“It’s just you ma’am.” She replied softly.

Chapter 8
I opened my mouth to say something else, but at that moment the door to my office opened again and I turned my head to see Xavier walking in, looking all exhausted,
“Hope this is a good time.” He said, turning to meet my eyes. My heart took a leap and I was genuinely pleased to see him.
Impossible,” I replied, standing up to greet him. But just then, a small figure came out from behind him and before I could do anything, launched itself against my leg. hugging me tightly.
“Mommy.” He said loudly, not willing to let go. I bent to one knee and hugged him even tighter.
“Hey, sweetheart,” I said into his ears sofily, planting a kiss all over his face. “Did you miss me?”
He let go of me and nodded excitedly, before walking up to Xavier again. I stood on both feet and walked towards him “Thank you,” I said to Xavier, before hugging him. He wrapped one arm around me and hugged me tightly.
“You owe me,” he whispered softly. I let go of him and smiled, fixing his hair which seemed a lot different than how it was just a few hours ago.
“I don’t doubt that,” I replied smiling.
“Uncle Xavier took me to the water park, you should have seen it, Mom. It looked so cool.” Brian cut in excitedly, running through the room with all the energy he had.
I let go of Xavier and walked back to my desk and sat behind it. Laura, who had been standing there and watching us, smile at me and looked at Xavier nervously,
“He doesn’t bite you know,” I said to her, referring to Xavier.
She smiled nervously and was unable to get words out of her mouth. I noticed she was struggling and I understood.
“I better, go.” Laura finally managed to say.
“Okay, Laura. I’ll call you when there’s something.” I said to her and without another second wasted, she walked out of the office at lightning speed.
The room was silent, the only sound that could be heard was from Brian who was playing with his toys.
“Well, that was weird,” Xavier said as he sat down in front of me,
I smiled and gave him the eyes. “What?” He asked with a small smile forming on his lips.
“I think she likes you,” I replied to him, giving him a knowing look. The look on his face changed and he threw his head back.
“Oh, please!”
