Chapter 14
“Nolan’s POV
The cold night breeze brushed through my skin, sending a shiver down my spine as I got out of the car. I buttoned up my jacket which I couldn’t get to stay where I wanted it. The wind seemed to be getting heavier by every second and so did the thumping in my heart.
Tonight was supposed to be straight to the point, a simple event, some drink, a small unnecessary talk, and then that would be all. But deep down I had the feeling that it definitely wasn’t going to be that way.
I was a few steps ahead of Zoe, but I stopped when I got to the front door. I turned around with an outstretched arm and she took it with a smile on her face.
“Let’s just enjoy tonight.” She said softly and in a somewhat pleading tone. I was here after all and I didn’t know what she moaning about. We walked through the threshold and entered into the familiar halls which I was now getting tired of
“Alpha Nolan.” Someone called from behind and before I could turn around, she had reached where we were and was standing in front of us.

“It’s so good to see you again,” she added, her eyes fixed on me with admiration. I nodded slowly, before letting go of Zoe whose smile for a moment had disappeared.
“You don’t have to go through corners, she’s all yours,” I said to her knowingly. Zoe’s smile reappeared and she leaned in. placing a kiss on my cheek.
“Tll be right back.” She said, before walking off with the woman who just greeted us, and within seconds she had disappeared.
into the crowd.
I rolled my eyes in slight disgust. She had done everything to convince me to come and she just disappeared before it even began. I rubbed the back of my neck and walked further into the hall.
I scanned through the crowd for a while, before my eyes finally fell on my spot. I made my way there without a second thought.
“Whiskey, neat,” I ordered, sitting down on one of the comfortable stools. It didn’t take long and there was a glass of whiskey sitting in front of me. I picked it up, looking through the room before taking a sip from it.
It burned through my throat like a newly kindled fire and I was about to take another sip when I heard a familiar voice call out from behind me.
“I can’t say I’m surprised.” The voice continued and I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was,
“Xander,” I said, smiling slightly as he sat down beside me.
“Alpha.” He greeted, folding his hand.
“You didn’t think I’d be here, did you?” He asked.
“Honestly, no. I figured you’d try and find an excuse to avoid this I replied, shaking my head.
Xander chuckled and then signaled the bartender for a drink. “I can’t be far from my Alpha, and besides I didn’t want miss the chance to see you suffering at a formal event…. I know quite well that you don’t want to be here.”
I winced dryly, slightly irritated that he could know things about me even if I didn’t want him to. We had been together for as long as I could remember, and he still was the only person that I could really count on.
I still had memories about that night, when he couldn’t get Ashley back, but all of it was behind us now.

“See that guy over there?” Lalled his attention, pointing my finger through the crowd and to the far end of the hall. Xander peeves and after a while, he nodded,
“That’s Alpha Xavier,” he said quietly. “Have you forgotten what he looks like? it’s not
that he’s here.”
“I didn’t forget, he never misses one of these things. It’s just that he looks different.” I muttered. His back was turned against us, but I could see how different he looked.
There was an element of power with the way he stood and even from where I sat, I could sense and notice how different he was from those around him.
“There’s someone else with him.” I continued.
“Oh.” Xander replied. “I didn’t know he now has a mate.” He added.
“I didn’t know either,” Xander replied in the same manner. The woman he was standing with seemed fifteen as well, it wasn’t someone who had been here before and I could see that with how close she was standing by him.
Xander turned his attention back to his drink, but I kept my eyes on Xavier, and just then he turned around and she did the same. My heart skipped a beat as soon as I saw her face.
“It can’t be,” I whispered under my breath. I was holding my glass tightly, as though I was going to break it.
“What’s wrong?” Xander asked sharply, turning to look at me with confusion in his eyes. I raised my hand and pointed my finger in their direction once again.
Look at her.” I said in a hushed voice.
Xander followed my eyes and when he finally said what I was seeing, the expression on his face changed and I could see the genuine shock all over.
“Is that…? No fuvking way… What the fuvk Nola”
My heart had stopped beating seconds ago and all I could do was stare. They were talking now, and soon after they were laughing. The woman he had with him was something born out of my worst nightmare, it was Ashley.
“How?” I asked, my voice barely audible. But before I could wait for that answer, I downed the rest of the drink in my glass and was gliding through the crowd.
“Nolan, Xander called after me, and without turning back, I knew he was going to follow. I moved through the crowd, my eyes fixed on her. She hadn’t seen me yet, but that wasn’t going to be for long.
“Ashley?” I called out with a cracked voice as I stood in front of them, trying to steady my breathing.
Tonight had just gotten to another whole new level and just like I predicted, it turned out that I was right. I was standing in front of a woman I thought all these years was dead. She looked even more beautiful and her hair seemed longer.
I wanted to be angry, but I couldn’t. My heart was racing and for what seemed like an eternity, our eyes were firmly fixed on each other.
A small smile formed on her lips as she fixed her posture. “Nolan,” said, her voice calm. Too calm. She didn’t look surprised at all, and I wasn’t dreaming.
“Wha-“I began, but Alpha Xavier stepped forward, positioning himself between us.
“Alpha Nolan.” He said in a cheerful tone, but his face didn’t look like it. I tried to look over his shoulder to Ashley, but he moved in the direction of my head, as though he was protecting her from me.
“It seems you know my mate.” He said softly, moving out of the way so I could see her again.

Well, show know Inne sts is possible” I managed to say, trying to figure out the right words.
You’re not secting a ghost, Nolan. It’s me, Ashley” she said firm Her voice was just as I remembered it, but she was wounding run by more confident now and didn’s have even the shtest show of fear and nervousness.
“W’s good to see you” She added, before moving hack to Alpha Xavier who then wrapped his hand around her waist.
