Chapter 3
The project moved quickly.
But not fast enough for Lena.
She kept pressing my partner
“This is Eihen’s first project since coming back. I don’t want it to flop.
I watched the whole performance with a growing sense of detachment.
After that meeting, when I got home, Lena sat on the couch for a long time.
Finally, she spoke.
“We’re still technically married in secret.”
“I just haven’t found the right time to explain things.”
“I’ll tell people soon. I promise.”
“But right now, this project comes first.”
I nodded, noncommittal.
I didn’t bother reminding her that the wedding she promised me?
Was in ten days.
A wedding she never planned.
A wedding she was clearly hoping would just fade away.
Because let’s be honest–Ethan was the only thing that mattered to her.
Lena tried to keep me and Ethan from running into each other too much.
Even my partner noticed.
He pulled me aside one day, grinning
“You and Lena ever hook up before?”
I laughed. “What? No way.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“She gives you these guilty looks when she thinks nobody’s watching.”

“Classic ex–girlfriend guilt. Like she wasn’t quite done screwing you over.”
1 froze for a second.
I’d seen the look too.
But after everything between us, I couldn’t tell if it meant anything anymore.
Countdown: 10 days.
That day, we had a scheduled project meeting.
Ethan lingered afterward, making casual small talk.
I knew he’d figured out the truth.
But I played it cool.
After the meeting, Lena surprised me.
She offered to drive me home.
First time ever.
“Your work… it’s better than I expected.”
In five years of marriage, this was the first compliment I’d ever gotten from her.
I paused, looking at her, confused.
She hesitated too–then asked:
“Do you think… there’s still time for the wedding?”
I looked down.
She wasn’t asking to go through with it.
She was asking for permission to cancel.
Because of Ethan.
“Let’s just call it off. There’s only a few days left anyway.”
I looked at her.
Didn’t call her out.
Didn’t want to humiliate either of us.
She blinked, like she couldn’t believe I agreed so easily.

She asked again.
“You really don’t care?”
Fair question.
A year ago, I probably would’ve snapped–begged for an explanation..
Most of the humiliations in this marriage came from my breakdowns.
Even though every breakdown started with something she did.
I shook my head.
“It’s just a ceremony. Doesn’t mean anything.”
We drove in silence for a while.
Then Lena said:
“How about… we take a little trip? Relax a bit?”
“There’s a cute historic town nearby.”
I glanced at my phone.
Ten days until the end of the divorce cooling–off period.
“No thanks.”
Her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
She nearly ran a red light.
“Okay, how about the beach?”
“Or that steakhouse you’ve been dying to try?”
She threw out idea after idea–and I turned down every single one.
By the time we pulled up to my place, her face had shifted from awkward to guilty to… irritated.
To soften the tension, I said:
“Maybe we can swing by the old house sometime.”
Our first home, back when we’d just gotten married.
I did feel a little nostalgic.
Lena stared at me, trying to read my expression.

Even after I got out, she stayed in the car.
Sat there in silence.
For a long, long time.
