Chapter 26

No woman could ever bring Clarence down from his high horse to please or win back, not even this arrogant little girl. To Clarence, Seraphina was just a woman, and when she came to say goodbye, he planned to give her a cold shoulder. Imagining her embarrassed look, Clarence put on a sneer.

However, things took a turn. After Seraphina finished packing up the clothes, she just picked up the bags and left.

Seraphina knew Clarence recognized her, so she didn’t feel the need to maintain any politeness in front of him. With Catherine gone, there was no need for the show. So she simply walked out without a word.

Yet Clarence was stunned. All those clever comebacks he’d rehearsed were suddenly pointless. He sat on the sofa for a moment, lost in thought, until the burning sensation in his fingers brought him back–his cigarette was nearly burnt out.

“That darned girl, he cursed in his mind. He stubbed out the cigarette and strolled over to the window, where he could see the entrance to the villa.

The early summer sky was a brilliant blue, and plants were lush outside. Seraphina had already vanished from sight.

It was the first time someone had all the delivered clothes sent back. The

entire shop was in disbelief.

“Sera, did you say something inappropriate?” The manager, who usually thought highly of Seraphina, was now questioning her abilities.

With no way to explain the situation, Seraphina simply replied, “Ma’am, I’ll work hard to prove myself.”

The manager didn’t press further. Just then, two elegantly dressed women, clearly wealthy, walked in. “Go greet them, but don’t mess it up again,” the manager instructed.

“Got it,” Seraphina replied.

She then approached the two ladies, bowing slightly with a warm smile. “Ladies, we have our seasonal new arrivals, and several styles would perfectly match your elegant tastes. Let me show you…”

Her voice was as refreshing as a spring breeze, and her beauty made her more approachable. The two women followed Seraphina to browse the new styles. Under her sincere recommendations, they ended up buying four outfits–each from the most expensive line.

As Seraphina saw them off at the door, she said in a more friendly tone, “Ms. Ivan, Ms. Wood, we hope to see you again soon. I’m Seraphina, and I look forward to serving you next time.”

The two ladies were quite pleased with Seraphina. They nodded as they said, “Next time we need clothes, we’ll definitely come back to you. Seraphina, you speak so nicely and sincerely, and your fashion advice is so genuine. Unlike some salespeople who just throw around empty compliments, you actually get it.

“You’re a great person, and we’ll make sure to come to you next time.”

“Great! Safe travels, ladies,” Seraphina said, bowing as they left with satisfied smiles.

Watching Seraphina’s performance, the manager finally relaxed and walked over, giving her shoulder a reassuring pat. “Keep. it up.”

“Sure thing.” Seraphina nodded, feeling a swell of pride.

After a long day of hard work, she sold several outfits, finally making up for those ten items returned this morning. Seraphina became the top seller of the day, a tough feat for a newcomer. Her ability had earned her the manager’s respect

By the time she clocked out, it was already 9:30 p.m. She made her way to the bus stop, ready to head home.

The cool evening breeze was refreshing, washing away the frustrations early in the morning. Seraphina felt confident that with her sales skills, she could pay off the 200,000–dollar debt within

year.

But then, thoughts of Clarence’s cold face popped into her mind, and she shook her head to clear it.

It was late, and the bus stop was empty. As she looked down the road for the bus, a blue sports car came roaring through the night, breaking the quiet. The luxury car radiated an undeniable presence under the night sky. It suddenly screeched to a halt right beside her.

The driver, a man wearing sunglasses, looked effortlessly cool. He turned his head slightly towards Seraphina, a hint of a smirk playing on his lips, icy and mischievous. It was actually Clarence.

Just as I thought of him, there he is. But what’s he doing stopping beside me?‘ Seraphina wondered.

“Get in.” Clarence commanded.

Seraphina didn’t reply. She used to love that bossy tone of his, thinking there was a hint of affection in it that made her want to obey. She never imagined he’d still talk to her like that. She thought they’d be strangers for life. But he was now making a move to talk to her. Seraphina couldn’t fathom his intentions.

She thought that the debt was their only connection now. It was the reality she couldn’t escape, so she didn’t plan to play the stranger anymore. She took a moment, then opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat.

A smirk tugged on Clarence’s lips, clearly pleased with Seraphina’s response. He thought the cocky girl was just waiting for him to make a move.

“Buckle up-”

“Mr. Vanderbilt.”

They both called out and paused at the same time.

But before Clarence could continue, Seraphina said, “I’m really sorry, Mr. Vanderbilt. Just give me a bit more time, and I promise I’ll pay you back as soon as I can.”

Clarence’s smile faded. The streetlights glinted off his sunglasses, making him look even more aloof.

‘I reach out to her and she is talking about money? So, in her eyes, our whole relationship revolves around debt only?‘ Clarence thought.

“I’m making decent money at my job now. I’ll do my best to pay you back a bit every month,” Seraphina said calmly. “But I don’t have your bank account number. Could you share it with me? If that’s a hassle, just give me Randy’s number, and he can pass it on to you. By the way, is Randy still your assistant?”

Clarence watched her with those cool, steady eyes, her tone as flat as if they were just discussing the weather.

Five years ago, she was already composed, and now, she seemed utterly unfazed, like nothing could rattle her. It was as if he hadn’t even crossed her mind.

“You get in the car just to say this?” Clarence asked, his voice low.

“Yeah.” She showed no signs of backing down. “I really hope you can cut me some slack.”

Clarence let out a cold laugh. It was the first time he’d ever tried to give someone an out–especially a woman. He’d bent his rules and still didn’t get any gratitude from her. If she wasn’t appreciative, then he’d take it back.
