Uncle Benny invited me to walk around, Introducing me to the bigwigs from other companies. Meanwhile, Albert never strayed far from me. He seemed well–known among the business leaders, always friendly and sociable.
I felt someone’s eyes on me from the corner of the room. I jolted when I saw her. Lorraine quickly looked away when our eyes met.
I smiled. ‘Finally, Lorraine, you’re in my domain. You won’t be able to push me around anymore. You need this job, don’t you? Get ready to face the truth.”
As the night went on, guests from other companies started to leave, but our employees were still enjoying the live music. I was ready to head home.
I scanned the ballroom for Albert, but he was nowhere in sight. Meanwhile, Bradley was still busy overseeing the event staff.
I tried calling Albert, but he didn’t pick up. After waiting a while, I decided to head to the lobby Joshua. I had asked him to help with the event operations earlier that day.
“Hey, let me give you a ride home.” I jumped when Derrick suddenly appeared in front of me.
“Who do you think you are?!” I snapped, not looking at him and continuing to the lobby.
Derrick’s face went pale. He must not have expected me to react like that.

“Hey, I’m sorry. I was wrong. We can reconcile, right? For Gillian’s sake.” He followed me, pleading.
“What? Now he remembers he has a child?”
I exhaled sharply, trying to control my rising anger.
“Please, just wait. I need to talk to you,” Derrick grabbed my hand, trying to stop me.
“Let go! Let go of me!” I struggled to pull my hand from his grip.
“Just a minute, I need to talk,” Derrick kept insisting.
Bang!
Derrick staggered to the floor as someone punched him from the side.
“What the hell are you doing?” Albert yelled, rushing to free me from Derrick. Luckily, the hallway was empty, so no one saw what had just happened.
“Joy, you should fire this lunatic,” Albert half–shouted, pointing at Derrick.
But firing him now would be less fun. I still wanted to play around with them a bit.
“Forget it. Let’s go home!” I urged, pulling Albert’s hand.
“Yes! Take that, Derrick.” Derrick’s face was red from Albert’s punch and his own frustration.

Clara? A woman? Why did my chest suddenly feel tight? Could it be that Oh no. This was not good I couldn’t be moving on this quickly.
“Joy, there’s something odd about that guy who claimed to be your husband, Albert started again.
“Do you actually know him?” he asked.
“Well actually… he wasn’t lying.” I said slowly.
“What? So, that guy really is your husband? Albert looked at me in shock.
“N–no, not exactly. We’re separated,” I clarified.
Joy, why didn’t you tell me?” Albert shook his head, frustrated
“S–sorry, we’re not on good terms,” I explained. “I deliberately kept it a secret that the company he works for belongs to me.”
“Why?” Albert asked.
I sighed heavily, reluctant to share my personal problems. But I needed someone to talk to.
“Even though we were married for eight years, Derrick and his family always treated me poorly. They constantly belittled me. Then Derrick had an affair with a coworker. I couldn’t take it anymore and asked for a divorce.”
Tears streamed down my face.
No one would be happy about a divorce, especially when there was a child involved.
“Derrick’s an idiot. I’m sure he’s regretting it now,” Albert said angrily.
We arrived at my apartment. I declined when Albert offered to walk me to my unit. After I got out at the lobby, Albert drove off. I headed to my unit, exhausted by the day’s events.
