Chapter 8
When I got to the office, Lucas was waiting at my desk.
He slammed his hand on my computer.
“What’s your problem?”
“Why are you suddenly ignoring me?“–
“Why did you ask Mr. Anderson to switch partners?”
I grabbed the stapler off my desk and slammed it on his hand.
He yelped and let go, and I opened my laptop to get back to work.
“What’s gotten into you? Over Sophia? Are you really that petty?”
His annoying voice made it impossible to focus.
“Lucas, get lost, okay?”
He froze. “You’ve never talked to me like this before.”

“It’s not about Sophia. We weren’t even official.”
“We’re both single. Since when do you get to control who I hang out with?”
“Who do you think you are?”
He kept going, acting like he was some kind of moral authority.
“Are you done?” I hit save and looked up.
“This was never about who showed up in your life.”
“It’s about me realizing you’re a flaky, self–centered jerk.”
“Did you really think my love was just a given?”
He stared at me, stunned, like I’d just slapped him with the truth.
At the office, their reputations were tanking.
Family members were showing up, and their work was a mess.
Management caught wind and called them in for a talk.
When they came out, Sophia’s eyes were red.

I guess the company gave them another chance.
After all, with no major losses, they could afford to be a little lenient.
Lucas went straight back to work, ignoring even Sophia when she tried to talk to him.
I stopped paying attention to either of them.
The project was almost done, and I didn’t have time for distractions.
That evening, Mrs. Thompson and my mom came back together.
The three of us went out for dinner.
Mrs. Thompson rushed over to me.
“Emily, I heard you two had a fight.”
“Give him another chance. I’ll talk some sense into him.”
My mom pulled her aside.
“Let the kids figure it out on their own. They’re not babies anymore.”
She wasn’t expecting my mom to stay out of it.
She looked even more upset.
The project was finished, with just a few loose ends to tie up.
As the lead, I got a lot of praise from the higher–ups.
My transfer to headquarters was already in motion.
Sophia, as usual, was slacking off, her contribution practically negative.
Lucas tried to step up at the last minute, but he was so far behind, he could barely keep up.
After the celebration dinner, I saw Sophia pull him aside.
They whispered in a corner.
“Lucas, I got an offer from the rival company. Let’s jump ship together.”
“Get away from these people who don’t appreciate us.”
Lucas stood there, thinking.
Sophia kept going, excited.
“It’s simple. We just need to bring a little ‘gift‘ with us.”

“Double the salary.”
“You worked on the last project, so you know the numbers. We just take them with us…”
She had no shame.
And she was dragging the whole company down with her.
I was furious.
Luckily, the final key data was something I’d tweaked alone.
No one else knew the core numbers.
When I heard Lucas hesitate, then agree, I walked away.
They’d have to face the consequences of their actions.
I wasn’t going to save them.
