Chapter:13 You Had an Abortion?
Mr. White addressed the principal, “I just got off the plane and rushed here to handle this. If she doesn’t resign, you won’t just lose new students; you’ll lose the students you already have!” The principal looked anxiously at Helen. She signaled to him, The Reed Corporation is the biggest sponsor…”
The principal looked conflicted. He didn’t want to lose the Reeds‘ financial support, nor did he want to offend the Education Bureau.
Mom, enough!” Caleb’s voice froze the air.“Don’t you think you’ve made enough of a fool of yourself?”
He addressed Mr. White, “I’ll take over my mother’s position as trustee. His authoritative tone brooked no refusal.
Mr. White’s gaze swept between Caleb and Evelyn, a knowing smile playing on his lips. “I believe you will be a better trustee than your mother.”
Evelyn softly told Lily, “Let’s go.”
“Evelyn!” Caleb’s voice stopped her, but she ignored him.
“Caleb!” Helen gasped, watching her son stride after Evelyn.
Seeing Mr. White staring in Caleb’s direction, the principal said, “Mr. Reed is a prominent figure in town. With him as trustee, the school will reach an extraordinary new level.” “She used to be more prominent…” Mr. White murmured, leaving the principal puzzled. He was too afraid to ask further.
In the parking lot, Evelyn buckled Lily into the car. Just as she was about to get in, Caleb showed. up. He looked impeccably dressed, but his expression was cold and severe. Evelyn didn’t stop. She got into the driver’s seat, but Caleb stopped the door from closing. His eyes were icy. Leaving the Reed family will ruin Lily!”
Evelyn’s cool
gaze swept over him. A chill went through him. Her eyes were always bright when she loved him. Now, her empty eyes sent a jolt of disorientation through him. “Tommy had an allergic reaction on his birthday, right?” Evelyn suddenly brought it up. “You knew that?” Caleb’s voice was sharp.
a father, and it will ruin Tommy.”
Evelyn said, I’m telling you, you’re failing as a father,
Caleb saw through her.“You said you cared about Tommy, but you ignored him. You want to make him regret not going with you? He’s just five years old!”
“I left the Reed family with no intention of returning.”
He inhaled sharply. Then, he took a deep blue box from his pocket and slid it into the car.
“Here. I chose it.”
Seeing the box, Evelyn shook her head, laughing.
“I won’t take anything from you except marital property.”
“Evelyn, if you keep this up, I will really divorce you!” He was losing patience. “I’m not holding Savannah’s injury against you. Lily’s a child, but you’re not!”

He released the door; the box landed on Evelyn’s lap, like a monarch’s gift to a subject. Evelyn opened it, revealing a sapphire bracelet. Her eyes narrowed. “What’s the size?”
“14.2 centimeters.” He blurted it out.
Evelyn smiled bitterly.
“That’s Savannah’s size.”
She tossed the bracelet out the window.
Caleb’s brow furrowed, his dark eyes swirling with emotion.“You’re jealous of Savannah, that’s
hy you’re fighting with me.”
I’ve known Savannah for over twenty years. If I loved her, would you even be here?”
The question stirred a distant memory. Her reflection showed a broken smile.
“Do you remember what happened three years ago? You went to Savannah, leaving me to go to the hospital alone. I had a 104–degree fever, the doctor was off, the housekeeper had left, and I was waiting for you…”
Caleb’s memory returned.
Didn’t you take a cab? He couldn’t understand why she still remembered that.
I went to the hospital and called you several times, but you didn’t answer…”
“Savannah got drunk and went to the beach. It was dark, and I was looking for her.” He scoffed. Why was she always mentioning Savannah? Jealous Women were unattractive.
Evelyn’s vision blurred.
“Caleb, I was waiting at the hospital for you to sign the consent form for termination of pregnancy!”
He froze.
“You had an abortion? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Evelyn lowered her eyes, unable to face her reflection. Seven years of love had been worn away, leaving only bitterness.
“Do you remember why I had a fever?”
His eyes narrowed. He recalled it vividly. Tommy had emptied the wish jar on his desk, shooting all the glass beads into the lake with a slingshot. They were his sister’s belongings. He was furious; the staff were silent. In the end, he made Evelyn retrieve all 32 beads. She’d spent the entire night in the cold water. When light dawned, she went to make breakfast for the children. She worked all day without a break and by evening she was burning like a piece of charcoal.
“Caleb, I stopped loving you three years ago, and I won’t foolishly wait for my son’s love anymore.” She wasn’t expecting anyone to save her, nor did she hope for pity.
As Caleb was lost in thought, Evelyn slammed the car door shut and sped away. He watched her leave, the scent of exhaust fumes lingering in the air.
Savannah limped out, leaning on Caleb for support.

you give her the gift?”
His cold gaze fell on the bracelet on the ground. Savannah gasped, picking it up. “I get it. She’s playing hard to get. Maybe when you stop being nice, she’ll come back and kiss
ass.
Ignoring her, Caleb walked away.
“Caleb! Caleb, wait for me!”
your
Caleb called his assistant, “Find all of Evelyn’s medical records from three years ago.”
