Chapter16: Watching Savannah’s Downfall 

Evelyn smiled, “I’ve thrown away a lot of trash. Take your time picking it up. 

Even if Savannah were naked in Caleb’s bed, it wouldn’t stir Evelyn’s anger. She’d simply watch Savannah’s downfall with amusement. 

Learning that the bracelet was from Caleb, Richard felt relieved; it meant Savannah still held Caleb’s affections.He turned his ire towards Evelyn. 

Caleb divorced you, so you must have done something wrong! Get back together! We don’t have vorced women in our family!Are you not ashamed? A thirty–year–old single mother with a child… who would want you? 

Evelyn calmly ate, occasionally checking on Lily. 

“Dad, why don’t you ask “why I divorced Caleb?” 

“Why? You couldn’t even keep a man! Don’t you know I begged for that marriage to the Reeds? You’re too comfortable, so you’re being ungrateful!” 

“Dad, Evelyn’s voice turned cold. Before she could speak, Tiffany chimed in: 

“Lily, apologize to your brother–in–law Beg him to forgive you. You can’t find anyone better than him!” 

Richard sneered, “Unsophisticated country bumpkin!“He pointed at Evelyn, addressing Tiffany, “She wasn’t raised by us. She didn’t even tell us about the divorce beforehand.” 

Evelyn said, “If I had, I wouldn’t have been able to leave.” 

Richard snorted, glancing at Savannah.“I heard you took hi tone turned demanding.“Don’t be foolish and put that mo our company account; I’ll give you dividends.” 

“I invested it in the stock market.”

Before Evelyn finished, Richard’s eyes widened. He couldn’t tolerate defiance. He grabbed hist bowl and threw it at Evelyn. 

She instinctively closed her eyes, but the bowl didn’t hit her.Lily, standing on her chair, had caught it. Rice scattered on the table. Lily shouted, Grandpa! Don’t waste food!” 

Being reprimanded by a five–year–old, Richard exploded.“You two money–grubbing brats don’t 

deserve to eat here!” 

He grabbed the stir–fried tomatoes and eggs and threw them at Lily. 

Evelyn jumped up and rushed towards Lily. Lily, seizing the edge of the table, flipped the two–meter–diameter stone slab!The stir–fried tomatoes and eggs splattered on Richard.

“Aaah!! Tiffany screamed in terror.Richard grabbed Tiffany and stumbled backward. Evelyn. scooped up Lily and ran towards the kitchen. 

“Richard, I’m so scared! Tiffany clung to Richard. 

He patted her shoulder.“Don’t worry, I’ll give them both a slap, and they’ll behave!” Tiffany flinched. Savannali’s face was alight with amusement. Evelyn hadn’t been hit by Richard before. This was quite entertaining. 

“Evelyn! Get out here! “Richard stormed towards the kitchen, unbuckling his belt.He held it like a practiced prison guard. 

Evelyn appeared at the kitchen door, holding a sharp knife. She motioned Lily inside, standing guard. Her eyes were bloodshot. Seeing the belt, a fierce maternal protectiveness ignited within her.She’d hoped for love from her parents. Now she understood that to survive, she had to sever this thin familial connection. 

“Dad, shall we see whose faster, your belt or my knife?” 

Richard, a physically imposing man, was a regular at the gym, while Evelyn was a tired housewife. Would he be afraid of her knife? Yet, he sensed her deadly resolve, like a hunter facing a mother lion defending her cubs.He would die trying.

Evelyn noticed his hesitation.Lily rushed over, clutching her arm.Evelyn, facing Richard, slowly backed towards the door with Lily. 

Richard sensed their plan. If you leave, you’ll never return!” 

They quickened their pace.Richard snorted and roare Evelyn.If she tries to return, don’t open the door!” “Richard!“Tiffany clung to him, trembling. “Don’t

He patted her shoulder.“If I don’t push her out, she won’t return to Caleb.I want Evelyn to know that if she leaves the Reed family and our family, she’ll be nowhere.” 

Savannah watched coldly, a sneer on her lips.Evelyn returning to the Reeds would only invite Caleb’s disgust. 

Lily sat close to Evelyn in the taxi. Her bravery in the face of Richard had vanished, replaced by fear as they drove into the darkening night.
