Lily considered, looking at Shane and Lu Fang.“Um… I’ll tell Mommy tomorrow morning!” On the way home, Shane put Lily to sleep, slipping an earbud in her ear and playing a recording: “Today, Lily James went on a parent–child outing with Mommy and Uncle Shane. The James family won the ‘Perfect Family‘ award!”
Lily smiled in her sleep.
ily went on a parent–child outing with Mommy and Uncle Lu.Uncle Lu scared a lot of kids, and the James family won the ‘Worst Family‘ award.”
Lily’s smile vanished.
“Uncle Shane won all the games with Lily.Lily’s bad dad begged for forgiveness.Lily and Uncle Lu went on an outing.Uncle Lu didn’t understand the rules and lost. The bad dad laughed at Lily.”
Lily’s dream shifted, causing her to clutch at herself in her sleep.
The Range Rover stopped at the Shen residence.Shane casually mentioned to Willow,“I’m free this weekend.”
Lu Fang’s face darkened from the driver’s seat.
Lily woke up, scratching her ear.Her dream felt prophetic. If she chose Shane, the outing would be wonderful. But with Lu Fang, she’d dreamt of children screaming at his sight.
She got dressed, made her bed, and went to the kitchen, where she was greeted by the aroma of food.Lu Fang, nearly six feet tall and powerfully built, stood at the stove, his fingers dusted with flour.
“Uncle Lu, what are you doing?”
He turned.“Making soup buns. One steamer is almost ready.”
Lily smelled the buns and drooled.“What else smells so good?”
Lu Fang opened a pot, showing a bubbling porridge.
“Shrimp and salted egg yolk porridge.”
“Wow!!” Lily’s eyes shone.
Lu Fang added some greens.“Did you wash up?”
“Not yet,” Lily said, running off.
Willow emerged from her room, seeing Lily in the bathroom. She saw Lu Fang in a black T–shirt, his strong arms revealed. He wasn’t wearing an apron; hers was too small for him.
She wasn’t surprised he was cooking. He was a skilled cook.
She looked at the porridge.“When did you get here?“It took time to prepare the shrimp oil to flayor the porridge.
“To make you a good meal,” he said simply.
Willow smiled.“I love your cooking, Big Brother! Come more often!”
His hardened features softened.

They ate together. Lily devoured the buns and porridge.“Uncle Lu’s cooking is so delicious! Mommy, can I take some buns to school?”
“Six enough?” Willow asked.
“Ten!”
Lu Fang said, “I’ve been experimenting with new dishes. If we go on the outing, I can make you lunchboxes.”
Willow
boasted, “Your
lunchboxes
are
amazing!So
delicious and
beautiful!”
Fang sighed.“Unfortunately, Mommy and I will be busy. We might not have time.” Lily rushed to her room and returned with a document.“Uncle Lu, can you come to the school outing with Mommy and me?”
Lu Fang looked at it, then at Lily.“Uncle Lu! Please! It’s okay if you scare the kids or don’t understand the games! I don’t want the ‘Perfect Family‘ award! I just want you and Mommy to come!”
Lu Fang nodded. “I’m free that day.“He looked at Willow, who agreed.
Willow dropped Lily off at school. She checked her phone and saw a reply! Luling: Do
you still need me?
Willow’s eyes welled up.She’d checked her email repeatedly last night, her heart sinking. Now, it soared. Her hand trembled as she dialed the familiar number.
She put the phone to her ear, closing her eyes.Tears fell. After the long ring, she heard a voice.
“Hello.” A refreshing voice.
“I missed you,” Willow choked out.
“Me too.” Me
Willow wiped her tears, but they kept coming. On the other end was a witness to her fiery youth. They’d vowed to support each other, to become better adults.Life had taken them on different paths, but they hadn’t drifted apart.
Hearing Willow’s sobs, Luling teased, “Cry more.Pay me back for the tears I cried for you.” Willow sobbed openly.Luling was her best friend, her childhood companion. When she’d
gone to Beijing, Luling had begged to come along.Luling worked in Beijing while Willow studied.After- Willow’s financial success, Luling’s career took off. They formed a racing team. Willow later gave Luling the money from selling the Corona.Luling went to America to pursue their dreams.
