Chapter 20

Mary placed a plate of fresh fruit on the table. “Ms. Samantha Lynch, you’ve been up and about all morning. Treat yourself to some of these fruits” Before Samantha could respond, Mary leaned in and asked, “Can we chat for a minute?
Samantha quickly grasped the situation. Spotting another servant nearby, she got up. “Mary, bring the fruit to the garden. Till snack on them there.
“Got it.” Mary carried the fruit, and they strolled towards a quiet pot in the garden. With no one around, Mary looked concerned. “Ms. Samantha Lynch, you’ve taken on a lot. You didn’t have to go out of your way to please Mr. and Mrs. Lynch like this before.
Samantha’s eyelashes fluttered down, hiding the sadness in her eyes, yet the sad aura on her was still obvious. I despised the charade, but I have to. In this household, Yvonne’s status is rising while mine is falling. Now, I have a chance to catch up, but Inter…
“These fruits are all imported. I’ve cut up a variety for you. Dig in. You hardly ate anything this morning” Mary’s tone was full of concern. “Oh, and one more thing, the family still hasn’t identified Yvonne as a Lynch. Your engagement to Christopher still counts in other eyes.”
Samantha’s eyes lit up. Yes. Christopher. I still have Christopher The lady of the Lynch family? As long as I marry Christopher. I could have everything
You two grew up together from a young age. Despite not much, you have met more times than the Yvonne did. She hasn’t even laid eyes on Christopher, Mary said.
“Are you suggesting… Samantha sensed Mary’s implication but hesitated to voice it. She refrained.
“I have a few connections in the Sanchez family. They work at Matthew’s estate. Heard he pulled a stunt–went on a hunger strike and skipped his meds to make Christopher visit, almost risking his life. Mary revealed.
“What?” Samantha gasped, shocked.
“But luckily, he’s okay now. He wants you and Christopher to visit him together. You have Christopher’s contact information, right? Why not invite him yourself?”
“But
“Christopher manages a huge business and is surely busy. But at heart, he’s just an average guy. If he sees a stunning lady like you taking initiative, he’ll surely take notice. Even if he’s clueless about matters of the heart and not in a rush to marry, there’s no hurry. You can build a connection, let your relationship with Christopher blossom. Once the Matthew agrees….. who cares about Yvonne?” Mary affirmed.
Samantha’s desire to marry into the prominent Sanchez family burned within her, but reason held her back. “Mary, we both know about the engagement heading towards Yvonne. I’m just the foster child around here.”
“But what if Christopher is into you?” Mary pushed confidently. Matthew only cares about Christopher’s happiness and wants a plump great–grandson. For him, Christopher’s feelings matter more than the engagement.”
Mary’s words ignited something in Samantha.
The Sanchez family is still clueless about Yvonne. Ms. Samantha Lynch, take action now.” Having watched Samantha grow up. Mary didn’t want her to endure any hardships. She believed that if Samantha could win over Christopher, she wouldn’t have to worry about anything in the future.
She continued, “Yvonne has noble status. She’ll find a fantastic match. But you? No parents, no fancy connections, just a foster child of the Lynch family. You know high society–it’s hard for a foster child to infiltrate an elite family. If you don’t sratch Christopher, Yvonne will always have the upper hand.”

Empowered by Mary’s encouragement, Samantha picked up hee phone and searched for Christopher’s WhatsApp account Browsing through their past messages like “You up?” “Busy?” “Nighty night,” she noticed he hadn’t replied to any. The last Interaction was when she asked if he was in town, to which he remained silent.
“Ms. Samantha Lynch, Mary urged on, cutting through Samantha’s doubts. She quickly sent a series of messages.
Hey, are you there?]
II heard your grandpa isn’t well. Let’s visit him?]
[Free today? Can you come over!]
[If not, I’ll have the driver. Don’t worry about it.]
[Really worried about Matthew.]
Upstairs. Yvonne walked onto the large balcony, enjoying the garden view. Suddenly, she noticed some figures conversing. Despite the distance, she could tell they were Samantha and Mary–Samantha sat on a wicker chair, while Mary stood close by seeming to be persuading her.
Yvonne shrugged, continuing to savor the view before heading back indoors Samantha and Mary stayed in the garden, glued to Samantha’s phone. Unlike before, Samantha’s screen lit up promptly. Her heart raced as she saw a response from Christopher. But all he wrote was a brief: [Not necessary.]
Samantha was overcome by a cold surge within her. Empowered by Mary, she sent a few more messages, showing her genuine concern about Matthew and hoping to visit him. By the end of lunch, Christopher still hadn’t responded. Samantha knew she probably wouldn’t hear back from him.
Meanwhile, Yvonne relaxed on the couch, tapping away on her phone screen, ordering: [Investigate the cause of the Triver Hospital fire on September 10th, eighteen years ago.]
BigWhite: [Boss? You serious about this? Triver Hospital?]
Triver Hospital was once located at a major intersection of three cities, a densely populated area. But now, it was history.
BigWhite: [Boss, why delve into this? It’s related to your background?]
Yvonne: [Yeah.]
She couldn’t shake the feeling that the fire had some suspicious elements to it. How could a hospital suddenly go ablaze? Cherry had mentioned it was a rainy night. If it was an accidental fire, it shouldn’t have spread so rapidly.
