After sending the message, Alice received no reply from Jack.
Looking at the screen, she felt something had changed, but she couldn’t quite name it.
She got used to having Jack in her life.
During her most vulnerable moments after her rebirth, he’d been her shield against the storm.
He came to her rescue.
He was both a mentor and friend to her and her feelings for him had changed,
His absence made her restless and eager to see him.
Feeling weird, she went downstairs to buy snacks to distract herself.
As she was paying, a car pulled up and beeped.
She looked back. It was Noah.
Her expression cooled. “Were you following me?”
“Alice, this is New York. Finding you was just a matter of time.”
His gaze was complex. He’d gone to some lengths to find her.
That doctor, Jack, was no ordinary person.
But Noah’s investigation had yielded nothing concrete.
Alice’s eyes were full of vigilance.“What do you want?”
“Alice, I mean no harm. The exam results are coming out soon. I’m just worried about you. Choosing a college is a big deal.”
Alice recalled the last time, when Noah had agreed with Luke, forcing her to apply to third–tier colleges with
Chloe.
She offered a sarcastic smile. “It’s unnecessary. I can handle it myself.”
“Alice, don’t throw a tantrum. Don’t jeopardize your future!”
Noah stood before her, his tone serious. “I’ve hired a tutor to help you and Chloe with your applications…”

Alice snapped.“Noah, you never listen! Is that so hard to understand?
“I hate your self–righteous moralizing!”
Noah looked pale as if hurt.“That… that wasn’t my intention.”
“Then stop it! Stay away from me!”
As she turned to leave, there was a thud. Noah had collapsed.
Alice hesitated to approach.
The driver supported Noah, saying urgently, “His stomach problems have been bothering him for a long time. He refuses to go to the hospital, and I’m worried it will get worse.”

She saw blood on Noah’s lips.
Annoyed, she helped the driver get Noah into the car.
As she was about to leave, Noah grabbed her hand and said weakly,“Alice, don’t go. I was wrong.”
Alice’s emotions were complicated. “You need to go to the hospital”
“Alice, can you stay with me?”
He pleaded with his eyes, pulling her hand.
The driver urged, “Miss Alice, please take him to a doctor. His condition can’t be ignored.”
Alice was pushed into the car by the driver.
She remained silent, her face grim.
Noah smiled weakly. “Alice, it’s been a while since we had a nice chat.”
Alice said coldly, “Didn’t you have Chloe? You don’t need me.”
It had always been that way.
“Cough… that’s not true. You’re not like Chloe. We’re siblings. You’re the most important one to me.”
He coughed, spitting blood.
Alice handed him a tissue finally.
Noah looked relieved.“I knew you still cared about me.”
Alice looked out the window, feeling cynical.
She’d once desperately craved her brothers‘ attention, longing for their recognition.
She’d given everything in her previous life, to no avail.
Now, she didn’t care, but Noah started to care about it.
People were so strange.
They arrived at the hospital, and Noah went for tests.
Alice was about to leave when a doctor stopped her. “You’re his family, right? Please persuade Mr. Welch to take his medication consistently. His stomach condition could worsen into cancer.”
Alice’s expression was cold.“If he doesn’t care about his health, who can control him?”
“Alice, is that how you talk about your brother? He’s like this because of us!”
Luke and Chloe arrived, agitated.
Alice threw the medical report at Luke.“Moralizing at every turn? You’re so filial. Why didn’t you know about Noah’s condition? How could you not notice his worsening illness while living with him?”
Luke was speechless.“I… I didn’t pay attention.”
“Oh, you didn’t pay attention. Instead of making excuses, try persuading Noah to see a doctor and take his
medicine.”
After her scathing rebuke, Alice left.
Luke was fuming.“Alice’s getting bolder.”

Chloe’s eyes lit up.“What contract?”
Was there something she could use against Alice?
“Luke, where’s Alice?”
Noah, after his check–up, was disappointed to find Alice gone.
“Noah, that ungrateful girl left. Why are you looking for her?”
Chloe approached. “Noah, are you okay? I was so worried. Why didn’t you tell us your condition worsened?”
“It’s nothing serious.”
Noah’s disappointment was evident. He’d hoped Alice would stay.
Chloe sensed a threat when she saw it.
She’d worked so hard, yet Noah still cared deeply for Alice.
Noah’s secretary rushed in.“Sir, a partner wants to terminate our contract, citing issues with our firewall software.”
Chloe said, “Get the technical team to fix it.”
“They can’t. That’s why they want to end the contract.”
Noah sighed.“Alice was in charge of that firewall section.”
He couldn’t bring himself to ask her for help, so he’d delayed it.
Luke scoffed.“I don’t believe we can’t solve this without Alice. Noah, leave it to me.”
Chloe, jealous, said, “Noah, if I knew how to do it, I would have solved this for you.”
Noah sighed.“Only after Alice left did I realize how important she is.”
Chloe’s face fell.
“What about me? What was me to you?” Chloe thought.
