Chapter 27
It felt like something was about to burst out, a heat rising from the outside in, as if something inside him was being crushed and pulled apart.
Unable to stop himself, Carl unconsciously moved his Adam’s apple. Standing in the shifting light, the movement looked almost too seductive, a rare sight for him.
Everyone in New York city knew that Carl was the embodiment of restraint. He was known for his ascetic lifestyle–he didn’t even touch meat, living on a vegetarian diet year–round. His air of noble detachment was something that no one had ever been able to break.
Now, with his shirt half–open and his hair tousled, even Manager Monroe couldn’t help but feel a chill run down his spine.
The little miracle doctor had really gone and provoked Carl this time.
Having worked closely with Mr. Cromwell for so long, and knowing that the Cromwell and Jenkins families had deep ties, Manager Monroe was familiar with Carl’s regular visits to the Cromwell family mansion, mostly to discuss breaki engagement. But in all these years, he had never seen Carl look at anyone with such dangerous intent.

Normally, Carl’s expression was cold and indifferent, sitting high above others as if nothing could move him. But now, this little miracle doctor… What on earth made her think it was a good idea to unbutton his shirt?
Manager Monroe buried his face in his hands in distress.
Amelia, however, hadn’t yet realized the gravity of the situation. She had finished teaching her lesson and was preparing to leave with her bag.
The doctors surely wanted to keep her, but they didn’t know how to convince her.
The bald–headed Director Luke spoke up eagerly, “Little doctor, are you interested in working at our hospital? We’re very flexible with the salary.”
Amelia casually tied her long hair back and refused bluntly, “No, I don’t like getting up early.”
“You can just see patients in the afternoon!” Director Luke was so enthusiastic that he completely ignored Carl’s presence.
Amelia remained unmoved. “I practice medicine as a hobby. And… Director Luke, have you forgotten?”
The words that came out of her mouth had a stinging effect- how many people had been slapped in the face by her claim

that medicine was just a hobby?
Director Luke winced. “What?”

“I’m a student at a vocational college,” Amelia said as she grabbed her bag. “The school you run, right?”
For a brief moment, Director Luke looked dazed. He did run such a school, one that had been in constant financial struggle. It was located in LA, and while it attracted students, the education wasn’t exactly top–tier. Still, he had kept it running to give students who didn’t do well in regular schools a chance to learn.
But… what was that? She was one of his students?
Director Luke’s mind reeled. “How could you be a vocational student?”
“I’m preparing for the relevant college entrance exam this year,” Amelia answered calmly.
Director Luke clenched his fists. Was that really the point? The point was that a vocational student was holding a chief physician certificate—and on top of that, her medical skills were so exceptional!
Director Luke took a deep breath. “Are you sure yo reconsidering? I can offer you full credits.”

At this, Amelia smiled with a hint of amusement. “Director, maybe you don’t know me that well. I’m always late, leave early, and I don’t care about credits.”
Director Luke: …
Carl, who had been listening quietly, finally let a small smile curve his lips–not the usual cold, dangerous smile, but something softer, like the first hint of spring after winter snow, captivating and impossible to look away from.
Amelia, still puzzled, asked, “Is something so funny?”
Carl didn’t move to fix the collar she had unbuttoned. He simply remained bent slightly forward, his collarbones clearly visible. There appeared to be something on them, maybe a tattoo–it was red, standing out beautifully against his pale
skin.
Amelia couldn’t make it out clearly but could tell it was striking.
“You’re about to make Director Luke choke on his own heart,” Carl said, his voice still laced with amusement.
It was hard not to like the way he spoke, even though it was edged with a certain charm.
Amelia’s bright, clear eyes met his again. This time, when her fingers brushed against his wrist, there was a seriousness in

“You…” she said slowly, her voice calm but intense. “You don’t have much time left to live, do you?”
