Alice’s face was icy.“A meal is hardly worth bragging about. Are you that starved?”
“Why are you so angry, Alice? I’m just suggesting your boyfriend treats you better. He should take you to a nice restaurant with French food!”
Chloe was thrilled. Finally, she had something she could one–up Alice on.

Alice turned.“You should focus on sleeping with your rich boyfriend. His mother is not a pushover.”

She’d been looking forward to this, and she’d bragged to Alice.
Garrett snapped, “It’s all because of you! My cousin found out about your actions in the legal circle and warned me to stay out of it, or Mom will kill me.”
Chloe said carefully, “But it was Max who spread the word.”
“My cousin’s not an idiot. He must have heard something.”
Chloe was curious. “Why do I feel your cousin is defending Alice?”
“Me too! Maybe there’s something going on between them. The last time I got beaten up in New York. He was the one who came to find me. Otherwise, I’d have pressed charges.”
Chloe was stunned for a while before recalling the man at the hospital.
She asked tentatively, “Was the man who came to see you at the hospital your cousin?”
