“These men,” Clara declared dramatically, pointing at the bald leader and his associates, “tried to abduct me! They said they ‘own this area‘ and threatened to kill us
both!”
The commander’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Is that so?”
The gang leader seemed to shrink under Keller’s gaze. “Sir, there’s been a misunderstanding-”
“Cuff them,” Commander Keller ordered his men, cutting off any excuses. “All of them.”
Within moments, the entire Red Star Society was being rounded up and placed in restraints. I stood back, somewhat amazed at how quickly Clara’s exaggerated phone call had escalated into a full military operation.
Commander Keller approached me while his men handled the arrests. “Mr. Knight,” he said, recognition evident in his voice. “I apologize for any trouble. William Vance speaks highly of you.”
“No trouble at all,” I replied, glancing at Clara. “Though I think the situation might have been… slightly exaggerated.”

I raised my eyebrows, giving Clara an appraising look. Her impulsive call may have done more good than I’d realized.
“Thank you for looking after Clara, Commander Keller continued. “William tends to be… preoccupied with his work.”
“It’s no problem,” I answered. “She’s an interesting young lady.”
Clara beamed at the compliment.
Commander Keller lowered his voice. “Between us, Mr. Knight, I’ve heard about your… capabilities. If you ever consider putting them to use for the city’s defense, my door is always open.”
I nodded, filing away this unexpected connection for future reference. In my experience, allies in high places were invaluable.
After ensuring Clara was safe, I drove her back home. Our plans for the evening thoroughly disrupted, I called Alistair Northwood to postpone our herb–gathering expedition to another day. The elderly alchemist was understanding, though I could hear his disappointment through the phone.
“Another time, young man,” he said. “The golden moonflowers will bloom again next
month.”
The following evening found me adjusting my tie in front of a mirror. William Vance had extended an invitation to a high–profile party–another social obligation I couldn’t avoid if I wanted to maintain my growing network of connections.
Anthony Harding stood nearby, checking his watch. “We should go. These events have a protocol, and being fashionably late only works for certain people.”

“Wouldn’t miss it,” I replied, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter.
