Chapter 6 Still Mad at Me?
The invitation card stung Jocelyn’s eyes.
After that, she just kept eating in silence and didn’t say a word.
She listened to Yvette and Zachary talk about family stuff and what needed to be done for the engagement party.
Jocelyn just sat there quietly, feeling like she didn’t fit in and couldn’t join their conversation.
After a while, Yvette went to the bathroom, and Zachary went with her.
That left Jocelyn alone in the big private room,
It was totally dark outside now, and when she checked the time, it was already past eight.
If she stayed any longer, she’d miss the last bus.
After waiting a few more minutes with no sign of them coming back, Jocelyn decided she’d not to wait any longer.
She got up, pulled the bank card Zachary gave her out of her bag, and left it on his seat along with the red invitation card.
As she left with her backpack, she told the waiter, “If my brother comes back, can you let him know I had to leave?”
The waiter said, “Miss, Mr. Price and Ms. Sullivan went to the next room to talk. Maybe you could wait a bit longer?”
Jocelyn shook her head, holding onto her backpack. “No, that’s okay. I have to go to school tomorrow.”
She was actually feeling a bit tired.
Staying any longer would just mean watching Zachary and Yvette being all lovey–dovey, which wasn’t interesting.
She could tell that Zachary wasn’t happy about being here with Yvette.
Jocelyn left the restaurant and walked a bit, just in time to catch the last bus.
She had to get used to being on her own.
After getting off the bus, she walked through a dim alley and headed into a shabby building.
The motion sensor lights in the hallway were broken, so Jocelyn fumbled in the dark to open the door.
When she got home, she locked the door behind her, went into her room, dropped her backpack, and then headed to the bathroom for a shower.
The school uniform she changed out of was soaking in a basin with laundry detergent.

It was almost 10:30 pm when Jocelyn finished her Vormesh homework and was getting ready to pack up her books. That’s when she noticed a notebook in her backpack that didn’t belong to her.
She pulled out the nearly new notebook, flipped it open, and saw that it had Christian’s name on it.
She traced her fingers over the name written neatly. Out of the few men she knew, only Zachary and Christian had such nice handwriting. Flipping the page, she saw math and physics formulas Christian had written for her.
She had forgotten to give this back to him after he slipped it into her backpack last time.
Suddenly, she heard a knock on the door.
She wondered who could be knocking at this hour.
The knocking didn’t stop, so Jocelyn went to answer the door. Looking through the peephole, she was surprised to see it was Zachary.
What is he doing here?
When she opened the door, a strong smell of alcohol hit her.
Zac, what are you doing here?”
“Can’t I come?”
Jocelyn tightly clenched her hands and replied, “No, it’s just unexpected.” She stepped aside to let Zachary
- in.
“Why are you still awake this late?” Zachary walked in as Jocelyn closed and locked the door. A light breeze brought with it the faint smell of smoke and alcohol, like he’d just come back from a social event. The strong scent mixed with his chilly aura, and even though it smelled pretty good, Jocelyn couldn’t bring herself to look at him, even just his back, for more than a second.
Had he been drinking?
Wasn’t he supposed to be getting ready for marriage with Yvette?
Jocelyn looked down at the heels of his leather shoes and said quietly, “I just finished my homework.”
It was unusual for her to feel uneasy around Zachary like this. It was the first time.
Tll get you some hangover soup.” There was still some left from last time in the fridge, though only one bowl remained.
When Jocelyn came out of the kitchen, she didn’t see Zachary in the living room. She carried the soup into her room and found Zachary standing by the desk, holding the notebook. He had a cold, distant aura Maybe she was imagining things, but he seemed to be angry.
His cold voice came out sharply. “Who’s Christian?”
His tone wasn’t harsh, but it made Jocelyn jump. She hurried to explain, “He’s my classmate. I borrowed this notebook from him. Zac, please don’t get the wrong idea. There’s nothing between us.”

Seeing how scared and anxious she looked, Zachary’s cold expression softened slightly. He set the notebook down and walked over to her, standing in front of her with a more paternal demeanor. His sharp gaze fixed on her as he said. “Josie, I’m not scolding you. It’s just that you’re still young.
“I told you, you should focus on your studies right nowand not waste time on someone who doesn’t matter. Got it?”
His voice was smooth and gentle, and even though he spoke kindly, Jocelyn couldn’t bring herself to look up at him.
She clasped her hands together and nodded, “I get it, Zar. I won’t cause you any trouble.”
Last time. Christian’s attempts to get close to her caused a big commotion at school and nearly led to a call to her parents.
With her parents having died in a car accident long ago, Zachary was her only family. When she enrolled in school, she listed Zachary’s phone number.
Her biggest worry was the teacher calling her parents.
If Christian hadn’t stepped in to speak up for her, Zachary would have shown up at the school and, given his temper, wouldn’t have let Christian off easy.
“I’ll focus on my studies from now on and won’t let you down,” she said in a quiet, hesitant tone.
Zachary’s gaze went to the hangover soup she was holding. He took it from her and then grabbed her hand. Jocelyn tensed up, trying to pull her hand away, but eventually gave up.
Zachary asked, “Did you put on the medication?”
“I did.” Jocelyn pulled her hand away from his. “It’s getting late. You should head back. I’m pretty tired and have class tomorrow.”
Zachary pulled his hand back and asked, “Are you still mad at me?”
Jocelyn shook her head. “No, I’m not.”
Zachary stepped closer, almost pressing his chest against her. With a cold and questioning tone, he spoke from above, “Not mad? Since I got here, why haven’t you looked at me, Josie? Why have you been avoiding
me?
“Are you scared of seeing me, or do you simply not want to see me at all?”
Jocelyn remained silent.
