“What?”
I jumped to my feet, thinking I’d misheard him.
“That’s impossible–check again!”
The attorney adjusted his glasses and looked closely.
“I’m sorry, Miss Scarlett. It’s definitely fake.”
I let out a dry laugh,
But the tears came anyway.
Seven years.

I’d asked myself hundreds of times-

It took me seven years to face the truth,
And six to build up the courage to walk away.

Jace is our son. He’s five now
When I gave birth to him. I almost died from blood loss.
Through the haze, I heard the doctor ask, “Save the mother or the baby?”
Johnson didn’t even hesitate.
“Save the baby.”
Those cold words shocked me awake,
I told myself–Scarlett, you can’t die.
Jace needs his mom.
That thought brought me back from the edge.
Honestly, Jace is the only reason I’m still alive.
But not even two days after I gave birth, Johnson’s mom took him away.
She said,
“Scarlett, it’s for his own good.”
“A kid shouldn’t be raised by someone like you.”

“Keeping him with you will only drag him down.”
As much as it broke me, I let him go–thinking he’d have a better life.
But there were so many nights I woke up crying,
Hugging the toys and clothes I bought just for him.
Whenever I made too much noise, Johnson would send me a short video of Jace.
That’s how I survived the next three years.
Until I finally asked for a divorce again.
That’s when his mother finally agreed to let me see Jace–once a week.
Today was one of those days.

I stood at the front door yelling for ten minutes.
No one answered.
Seven years married to Johnson,
And I still didn’t have the right to enter the family house freely.
A passing housekeeper took pity on me.
“Mr. Johnson took Jace out early this morning.”
I gave a bitter smile,
This was his punishment.
Whenever I stepped out of line,
He’d take Jace away.
And I’d always end up begging-
Trading my pride just to see my own child.
I took a deep breath and called Johnson anyway–for Jace’s sake.
“Hi Mommy!”
Jace’s sweet voice came through.
My eyes welled up instantly.
That was my baby.
“Jace, when are you coming back?”
“Mommy misses you so much.”
I could hear noise in the background–sounded like an amusement park.
But then I heard his voice again.
“I don’t wanna see Mommy.”
The tears froze.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing
“Jace, what did you say?”
His voice was clear. Sharp.

My hand clenched around the phone. I took a deep breath.
“Mommy knows you’re having fun.”
“That’s okay. Play as long as you want, okay?”
“I’ll wait for you. However long it takes.”
There was no hesitation in his voice. Cold–just like his father.
“No. Daddy said you made him mad. You’re a bad mommy.”
“Jace doesn’t wanna see you.”
“Don’t come looking for Jace again.“.
“Jace doesn’t like you anymore.”
The call ended.
And so did my last bit of hope.
Turns out…
My child doesn’t love me either.
That’s fine.
Now I can finally leave without looking back.
