Chapter 51
Ophelia said, “Have you ever looked into it? The chances of dying from childbirth complications are really low. It’s not like we’re living in ancient times where both the mother and baby would die so easily. And besides-”
“Even if the odds were only 0.01%, it’s still a no!” Kenneth cut her off.
Ophelia decided not to argue with him anymore. “Then you tell me, what would be acceptable?” She softened her tone, knowing that confronting wouldn’t get her anywhere with him.
“Nothing would be acceptable!” Kenneth’s voice grew harsher, leaving no room for negotiation.
Ophelia silently conceded, feeling there was no other choice. She leaned close to his ear and whispered something softly. The moment she finished, a rosy blush spread across her cheeks.
Kenneth’s anger flared even more as he lifted her chin. “Do you really think I’m that kind of guy?”
“Don’t you want to try? They say babies can feel it even when they’re still in the womb,” Ophelia suggested.
Kenneth gritted his teeth as he spat out each word. “I–Do–Not–Want–To!” His expression couldn’t have been more righteous. “I’ve already made arrangements with the hospital.”
Seeing that neither persuasion nor confrontation was working, Ophelia walked over to the computer, typed something quickly, clicked the mouse a few times, and then turned the screen toward him.
Displayed on the screen were several lines of text: [Question: What is the mortality rate for abortion?]
[Answer: 1%. While low, there’s still a risk, often due to anesthesia complications…]
[The risks of abortion for women…]
Kenneth fell silent the moment he saw it. He pressed his lips together as if he wanted to say something but ultimately couldn’t. After a pause, he finally asked, “Do you really want this?”
“Yeah.” Ophelia nodded seriously. “And if you don’t, I’ll find somewhere to have it in secret-”
“You wouldn’t dare.” Kenneth’s frown deepened, and his eyes grew darker as if he could devour her in his frustration. He thought angrily, ‘Why is she being so stubborn and out of control?‘
“Let’s go to the hospital.” He neither agreed nor mentioned the abortion again, which meant there was a chance this conversation could be postponed.
Soon after, the two arrived at a private maternity hospital, surrounded by a swarm of bodyguards who blocked every possible entrance. A medical team stood neatly at the door, waiting to receive them.
Kenneth wore a mask and sat in a wheelchair, pushed by Mark, while Ophelia stayed by his side. Kenneth stayed with her the entire time, watching as they drew half a vial of her blood, his brow furrowing even more.
They sat in the waiting area. Even with the VIP passage, they still had to wait half an hour, which felt like an eternity.
The nurses were extra attentive, afraid of making any mistakes. They’d seen wealthy people before but never anything on this scale.
One nurse whispered, “It must be tough being a rich wife. Who knows how long she’s been trying to get pregnant with this baby?”
Another nurse chimed in, “It can’t be, right? Her husband looks so fierce. He doesn’t seem too happy. Could it be…that he got cheated on?”

A third nurse added, “Maybe, I mean, look at him sitting in that wheelchair. He’s probably infertile.”
Kenneth had no idea that, in the eyes of others, he was already considered the victim of an affair.

Just then, the doctor came over to personally deliver the test results. His forehead was covered in sweat from the nerves, and he opened his mouth, unsure how to break the news.
Mark took the paper directly from the doctor’s hands and passed it to Kenneth. Ophelia tilted her head to take a look as well.
“Negative…” Kenneth lifted his eyes, giving the doctor a sharp look.
The doctor’s mind was racing at full speed, already planning where he’d be buried after this. Given how much families like Kenneth’s valued their heirs, if there were no pregnancy, Kenneth would probably tear the entire hospital down.
The doctor stammered, “Y–yes, Mr. Sinclair, Mrs. Sinclair isn’t pregnant. The nausea she experienced might have been caused by dizziness or a psychological reaction.”
When Ophelia heard that, her eyes revealed a trace of disappointment. She didn’t need to question the result–she wasn’t pregnant. The nausea might have had something to do with Brock’s death.
Meanwhile, Kenneth’s lips curled into a faint smile, clearly pleased. The doctor, seeing this, thought he must have been seeing things, completely confused. ‘Why is Mr. Sinclair smiling
Ophelia was the only one who could understand Kenneth’s look, and it clearly meant, “Well, that simplifies things.”
The day after they returned from the hospital, Ophelia got her period.
Ophelia had grown up by the sea in the slums, and because she’d caught a chill during her first period, she had been suffering horribly from period pains ever since. Even though she had a high tolerance for pain, she would still turn pale, drenched in cold sweat, and feel completely drained, only wanting to curl up in bed and not move.
This was the first time Kenneth had seen her like this, and it hurt him even more than when he saw her vomiting. He wished he could take the pain for her. He researched online for all kinds of remedies–hot chocolate, heating pads, acupressure— but none of them worked on her.
In the end, he couldn’t bear seeing Ophelia suffer anymore and had his private doctor prescribe painkillers. After she took them, she fell into a deep sleep and didn’t wake up until the evening, feeling much better than before.
Ophelia wrapped her arms around Kenneth’s waist, resting her head on his chest. “Did you know? I heard that after giving birth, if a woman takes care of herself properly during the recovery period, her periods won’t hurt as much anymore.”
He pondered, ‘Is she subtly trying to convince me of the benefits of having kids? I believe in scientific evidence!‘ With that thought, he quickly grabbed his phone and looked it up online. The answer was–not necessarily.
Kenneth smirked. “Don’t try to trick me.”
“It’s true! I have proof,” Ophelia said, and that proof was Chloe.
Ophelia turned her head, meeting Kenneth’s gaze. He’d never seen such longing in her eyes before. So, he asked, “Do you really want one that badly?”
“Mhm.” She nodded.
Ophelia wanted a child. She was curious about what it would feel like to have one. In Chloe, she had seen the deep bond between a mother and her child, but with Heather, she had only seen the coldness and selfishness of a mother’s love.
Ophelia really couldn’t understand how a biological mother could not love the child she had carried for ten months.

Although she had completely given up on that family, she still couldn’t let go of this obsession.
Seeing the sadness in her eyes, Kenneth sighed and gave in. “Well talk about this later.”
Ophelia’s eyes lit up immediately, and a smile crept across her pale face, making his heart ache. He realized once again that he was powerless when it came to her.
Kenneth suddenly remembered what she had whispered in his car earlier and said, “Don’t forget the promise you made to
me.”
It took Ophelia a moment to realize what he was referring to. As soon as it clicked, a faint blush appeared on her otherwise pale face.
The following day, Ophelia’s stomach felt much better, and she joined Kenneth downstairs for breakfast.
Lisa came over and said, “Mrs. Sinclair, two people are at the door. They claim to be your mother and sister, and they said they want to see Mr. Sinclair.”
Ophelia’s hand froze as she took a sip of the soup. She arched an eyebrow and glanced at Kenneth. He kept a straight face, but as soon as he saw her smiling like a little fox, he could tell exactly what was going through her mind.
