Chapter 4
I couldn’t breathe properly while my mother–in–law’s foot was pressed on my neck, and I couldn’t help but let out a pained, choked sob.
Hearing how much I was in pain just seemed to fuel my mother–in–law even further.
“Police, she’s the one who set that house on fire!” She screeched. “Get her away from here so my son can rest in peace!”
The police couldn’t watch this go on any further, and he quickly pushed my mother–in–law aside, helping me get up from the ground. “Hello, Miss Carson, we have to bring you with us to be questioned at the police station.”
“Yes, get her away!” My mother–in–law shouted, wanting nothing more than me to leave as soon as possible.
That’s when I finally realized that my in–laws knew that Joey had faked his death, too. They were in on the sham the entire time, so there was no wonder why they were able to exploit and extort me so readily in my past life.
The whole time, I was the only one who didn’t know the truth!
In my past life, I gave my all to them without a single word of regret, which made the sting of betrayal hurt
that much more.
“I wasn’t the one who did it,” I said calmly. “The real criminal here is someone else. If you apprehend me, he’ll definitely find a chance to flee.”
What I said easily caught the police’s attention. “Who was it? Tell us!”
In response I only pointed towards Joey, covered in white cloth. “Him.”
What ensued was nothing but silence.
Winnie’s face turned an amusing shade of green as she thought I saw through her ruse, and she shrieked, ” Nina, how could you be so shameless? Joey already died for your sake, and you’re going to pin the blame on him?!”
Then, she turned to look at the police officers. “Please, tell the judge to punish her with the heaviest sentence! She needs to pay for her sins in prison!”
Tony, who’d been quiet until now, spoke up as well. “Everyone knows how good of a man Joey is, so he couldn’t have done it! He’s already dead, and you slander his good name like this?
“I’m sure he wouldn’t have married someone like you if he knew this day would come! If he didn’t marry you, he wouldn’t have wasted his life on something so trivial!”
thought it was nothing but an accident as well, in the past. Joey was the person who I thought loved me the most in this world, so he was the very last person who I thought would hurt me.
That was until he pushed me down the stairs to my death.
That was when I knew he set our house on fire on purpose. He was the captain of the fire department, after all, so no one would ever question him.

With a bitter smile, I choked out, “I have proof.”
