Chapter 5
A full shiver racked Winnie’s frame, and she stared at me fearfully for a moment before she suddenly shrieked at the top of her lungs while holding her head attracting everyone’s attention.
“Quick, sedate her!” She ordered frantically. “She’s hallucinating because of the fire, so we can’t believe what she says! She’s gone mad!”
No one moved in response, only looking at her with puzzled expressions. Clearly, she seemed like the one who’d gone mad instead of me.
Seeing this, Winnie became even more hysterical. “I’m a doctor! Aren’t you going to believe me?”
The police looked at each other worriedly, before looking back at me. “Miss Carson, I’m afraid we can’t brush aside the possibility that you’re mentally compromised, so can you please come back with us to the police station?”
Winnie breathed a sigh of relief at his words, but I continued gripping onto Joey’s bed with a death grip.” I’m not going anywhere until the donation center arrives.”
My mother–in–law’s expression darkened, and she pointed straight at me and scolded, “Don’t you dare eling to my son! Buzz off!”
Tony reached for me and tugged at me, dragging me to the ground with brute force. “If you’re too scared to go, I’ll take you there myself! Let’s see what happens when they get proof you’re the culprit!”
The firefighters followed suit, trying to drag me out of the hospital, and I struggled and tried my darndest * to hold on.
“Hello, is Miss Nina Carson here?” A staff member with the Body Donation Center’s logo walked up to me. “Are you Mr. Joey Pierce’s wife, Miss Nina?”
I almost burst out in tears.
Finally, my patience paid off.
“Do you really want to donate his body?”
My mother–in–law snapped out of her stupor, and blocked Joey’s body from view. “I won’t let anyone touch my son’s body, so get lost!”
The staff took out the donation forms that had Joey’s signature on it. “Mr. Pierce signed this before, so it’s legally sound. We have all the right to collect his body without agreement from his family. On top of that, we found the local news station to broadcast this live.”
Then, the reporter who was holding a camera spoke, “Captain Pierce has sacrificed his life in his duties, so we wanted to spread his name as a model for society, to show everyone what it’s like to sacrifice oneself for the greater good.”

Meanwhile, Winnie didn’t say a single word, but she broke out in cold sweat, and my mother–in–law’s legs went weak, falling to the floor with a thump. “No way, you can’t donate his body! Over my dead body, I tell you!”

Chapter 5
As she talked, she gave my father–in–law a look, and he started to cause a scene too, the two old seniors kicking up a fuss on the floor like babies.
The staff had evidently never come across such a difficult situation before, and I could feel their pleas for me to help in their eyes.
“Mom, it’s a good thing to donate for a good cause,” I said. “Are you causing a scene because there’s something we don’t know?”
My mother–in–law froze on the spot, and didn’t dare move a muscle, lest she betray her thoughts.
“We can’t wait any longer, or his organs will lose viability.”
The staff members started walking towards Joey, wanting to bring him into the operation room, while the reporter pointed her camera right at him.
Winnie’s knees were shaking, but she held onto the doors of the operation room like her life depended on it, which, in a sense, it did.
“You can’t go in!” She exclaimed through gritted teeth. “I already checked, and all his organs are already damaged badly!”
“He can always donate his corneas!” I supplied helpfully.
Winnie immediately clapped her hands right onto Joey’s face, covering his eyes. “N–No, his eyes were smoked badly too!”
The staff was disappointed, but they continued, “Well, we can still donate his body to be used as a cadaver for medical school…”
I could feel my in–laws‘ nerves from where I stood. After all, if he was brought away, it would only be a matter of time until they found out that he was faking his death.
“Wait,” I stopped them. “Let’s not be in such a rush to donate his body.”
Winnie was clearly dumbstruck by my sudden change in attitude.
“T–That’s right, we can’t just…”
I scoffed.

“In my opinion, we should hold a three–day wake for him, and let the entire city say goodbye to him before he’s donated!”
