The dungeon echoed with the clanking of chains and Halbert’s strained breathing–an ceric, oppressive atmosphere.
He couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for his brother. “Tristan said if you admit your mistake, you can leave. Just think of something, anything, to say sorry and I’ll get you out of here.”
More rattling followed, chains clashing violently. Halbert was wrestling with the chained wild wolves.
“I didn’t do anything wrong. Why should I apologize?” he shouted from the shadows.
“What’s wrong with you? You enjoying your little slumber party with the wolves?” Christian snapped. “You’re not even scared they’ll eat you?”
He noticed Halbert’s breathing was uneven. A full day and night–this was the longest Halbert had ever lasted in here.
Christian tried again, voice gentler this time. “Just say sorry, even if you don’t mean it. It’s not gonna kill you. Why go up against Tristan of all people? You don’t even know how you’ll end up if you keep this up.”
“I said no apology–and I meant it.”
Halbert wasn’t going to beg. Not a chance.
“Listen to yourself, you’re shaking when you talk,” Christian sighed. “It’s not about pride. Just fake it for Tristan. Is it really worth it?”
There was no reply–just the continued noise of Halbert’s ongoing brawl with the wolves.
Christian had said it a hundred times–Tristan should not be the one disciplining people.
This was the result: twenty–one years of relentless discipline, and it produced a brick–headed little beast.
He could only shake his head.
Honestly, he didn’t know what to do with this stubborn kid.
Eventually, Christian turned and made his way back, deciding to appeal directly to Tristan. Maybe if he could get their eldest brother to back down, Halbert wouldn’t need to grovel.
“Tristan, Halbert really can’t take much more of this. He’s still a kid. You’ve got him locked up fighting starved wolves–how is he supposed to win that?”
He glanced at Ronaldo beside him, silently begging him to chime in.
Ronaldo crossed his arms, unimpressed. “Serves him right. He thinks he’s all grown up now, doing whatever he wants. We searched for our sister for years, and he tried everything to push her away. It’s childish. Let him suffer–it’ll humble him.”
“Ronaldo, you’re being too harsh! Halbert’s smart, and if anything really happens, Tristan will regret it,” Christian argued.

Seeing Ronaldo unmoved, Christian turned to the only person left who might care.

“Ronaldo’s right,” Tristan said coldly. “Three to five more hours won’t kill him. If he can’t make it, then he was never fit to be a successor in the first place.”
Christian was stunned. “So that’s it, huh? He’s not even blood, so you don’t care if he gets torn to shreds. And when it’s over, I’m the one who’ll have to stitch him back together.”
Neither Tristan nor Ronaldo responded.
With a final huff, Christian gave up–for now.
If he waited three to five more hours, there might not be anything left of Halbert but bones.
Frustrated, Christian left the study and headed to Eliza’s room.
He straightened himself up, fixed his expression, and knocked politely.
“Eliza, are you in there?”
A voice behind him startled him. “Looking for me?”
He spun around. Eliza was standing behind him, arms crossed.
“You’re-”
“The butler showed me around,” she said plainly. “Now, what do you want?”
“It’s a small thing, really…” Christian said, instantly putting on a flattering tone. “It was my fault back then. for not recognizing you. But you’re not mad at me anymore, right?”
“Spare me the pleasantries. Get to the point.”
Christian smiled sheepishly. “It’s Halbert. He’s been locked in the dungeon all day and night. If this keeps up, he’s going to collapse. But if you go down and open the door–Tristan won’t get angry.”
Christian had always been soft when it came to Halbert. The dungeon was hell. Even an hour in there felt like years.
Halbert had gone a whole day without sleep, probably still fighting for his life.
Eliza frowned. “You people throw someone into a dark room just for making a mistake?”
“No, no–it’s not some regular room.”
Christian quickly realized Eliza had misunderstood.
This wasn’t a TV drama cell. The Sue family’s dungeon was something else entirely.
The family was powerful–enemies, spies, traitors were inevitable.
The dungeon was where the Sue family handled matters… off the record.
