Zark seemed to understand and remained silent. Ashley wanted to leave when Burke said, “Auntie, let’s fly a kite.”
Ashley refused, “I’m busy.”
Burke was disappointed, “Oh…”
Zark said, “Let’s go. We’re only two people.““I’ll watch; I won’t disturb you. Consider me Burke’s playmate.”
Ashley liked Burke. She didn’t want to be alone. She agreed. They chose a blue butterfly kite. Ashley had flown kites with Sam before. But this kite was large; they couldn’t manage it. Zark helped silently. They laughed happily when the kite flew. Zark’s gaze deepened. Ashley noticed and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Ashley took Burke away; Zark watched them from afar. They fished and looked at fish in a pond. It was lunchtime. Zark suggested they eat at a nearby restaurant. Ashley, relaxed, agreed.
She chatted with Burke. Zark moved their favorite dishes closer. He got a call. He said to Ashley, “I’ll take a call.”
“Okay.” It was Ethan. Zark went away, answering, “What is it?”
“Where are you? Eaten? My friend sent fresh seafood. Want to join us? Chase’s coming too.
