They arrived home, and Grandma hadn’t gone to bed yet. Seeing Ashley arrive in Chase’s car finally put her mind at ease, and she retired to her room.
Upstairs, Ashley called Steve to update him on the situation. After that call, Tim called. Half an hour later, after ending the call with Mark, Ashley went to her bedroom and found Chase already showered and lounging in bed, reading a book. He glanced at her as she entered, then returned to his reading. Ashley, in turn, averted her gaze and went to shower and do her skincare routine.
By the time she was finished, it was late. She looked at Chase. When he’d been cold to her before, she’d almost grown accustomed to it; being alone with him hadn’t been awkward. It seemed as if he’d been sitting there reading just to wait for her and turn off the light.
Ashley paused, realizing she might be overthinking things. Her heart calmed, and she drifted off to sleep.
