Sam, oblivious to the coolness in Ashley’s demeanor, relaxed after her mother’s reassurance. After Steve presented his gift, Ashley offered hers. First, the embroidery.“Grandmother, Chase helped acquire this embroidery for you.”
Grandma Rong examined it, clearly pleased. It was exactly to her liking.“She’s thoughtful,” she murmured.
Ashley then presented the emerald necklace.“This is from Chase.”
the emeralds were magnificent, and Grandma Rong did appreciate them. But because they were from Chase, she closed the box after a brief glance, placing it aside.“It’s lovely. Thank him for me.”
She didn’t ask about Chase’s attendance. She didn’t care to.
Ashley knew her grandmother disliked Chase. In the past, she would have interceded. Now, she simply presented her own gift, a set of writing implements.
As she’d suspected, Grandma Rong adored the writing set above all the others. She immediately took it to her study, excitedly composing calligraphy.
After the gift–giving, they enjoyed a lively breakfast together. Grandma Rong was beaming,
