They were talking as Ashley and Chase tidied the board.
Chase said, “You go first?”
“You go,” she replied. She’d lost by more than one point; she wanted to see her limitations.
As Ji Lao suspected, she hadn’t played much recently, having rarely faced strong opponents since Nan Zhizhi. She didn’t want to miss this opportunity. To her, Chase was simply an opponent, nothing more. She wouldn’t hesitate because it was *him*.
Chase didn’t insist, making his move. They played silently, without speaking. Yet, Ji Lao and Qin Lao sensed a strange rapport between them, as though they were long–acquainted, not strangers.
