Chapter87
Chase was busy. Over the next two days, he wasn’t home. Sam was bored and called Ashley. Ashley, having moved on from the previous events, answered.
Sam:“Mom, when are you coming home…”
Learning Chase wasn’t home, Ashley went home after work. Sam was thrilled, telling her about school and his new game, wanting to teach her. After he finished his homework, Ashley played with him. He was happy that night and wanted her to sleep with him. Ashley didn’t want to sleep in the master bedroom and agreed.
On Thursday night, as Ashley was bringing out the dishes, Sam called out, Dad, you’re back!” A deep voice answered, “Hmm, did you eat?”
“Not yet, but Mom almost finished.”
“Really?”
Ashley paused and came out. Sam and Chase entered.
“Mom, Dad’s back.”
Ashley glanced at Chase and looked away, “Hmm.” She gave her apron to the housekeeper and sat
down.
Sam ate happily, asking, “Dad, weren’t you coming back tomorrow?”
“I finished early.”
“Oh…” The Sterling family had relaxed dinner rules. Sam talked; Chase responded briefly. Sam turned to Ashley, “Mom, why aren’t you talking?”
Ashley gently said, “I’m listening.”
“Oh…” The housekeeper noticed Ashley’s unusual behavior. Ashley usually spoke to Chase after his business trips, but today she didn’t make eye contact with him. Chase seemed oblivious.
