Chase’s absence angered the matriarch and upset Sam. Ashley remained calm, serenely making tea for the matriarch, “He might have an emergency.” The matriarch went to bed early. Sam called Chase repeatedly; he didn’t answer.
The next morning, Ashley woke up alone. Sam was gone. Ashley asked; Sam, bored by Chase’s absence, had gone out with someone. The matriarch had caught a cold the previous night and returned to her house. She hadn’t wanted to disturb Ashley. The resort was empty except for staff.

On Sunday afternoon, Ashley planned to go home after dinner. Then, the matriarch called, “Ashley, I called Chase this morning, asking him to pick you up tonight. Did he contact you?”
No. Chase hadn’t shown up or called. Sam had left without contacting her either. She didn’t tell the matriarch to avoid trouble.
“Yes.”
The matriarch was relieved, “That’s good.” After checking on the matriarch’s health, they hung

After sunset, Ashley had dinner. She waited until 9 pm, but Chase didn’t show up. The resort was far from her home; it took over an hour and a half to get back. She decided to leave.
