Chapter 2
Chapter 2
After bowing for the last time, I went to place my daughter’s ashes. The tower had hundreds of small compartments marked with numbers. Nora liked the number 99, so I chose the 99th compartment. But just as I was about to place Nora’s urn inside, I heard Lily’s haunting voice.[]
“Wait!” she called out. “Isabelle, could you let me have that compartment? I hope my little girl can live to be 99 in her next life.”
I turned around and saw Lily putting on her pitiful act again, tugging at Steven’s sleeve. She was clearly trying to make things difficult for me. Steven, as always, took Lily’s side and said, “Isabelle, there are plenty of other compartments. Just
in.“] choose another one. Lily has deep feelings for her little girl; it’s only right to give in.”
There were so many empty compartments around us. Why should I be the one to give up?
“Steven,” I stared at him, “Is your daughter’s ashes worth less than a hamster?“]
Steven was stunned. “What?”
“Isabelle, are you out of your mind? It’s just a compartment. Why would you make jokes about your daughter’s life?” Lily seized the opportunity to accuse me.
Steven’s expression turned cold instantly. He shot me a glare and said, “If something had happened to Nora, John would’ve told me already. Isabelle, I didn’t think you were so cruel–you’re cursing your daughter just to target Lily. You came here just to cause trouble, didn’t you?“]
Years of feelings shattered at Lily’s slightest provocation. Indeed, trust between Steven and me had long disappeared.]
“Steven, look at her! She picked up some dirt somewhere, pretending it’s ashes, just to bully our little girl,” Lily cried, squeezing out a few tears. “Don’t worry. Our little girl will be placed in compartment 99, and no one can change that!“]
Between Lily and me, Steven would always choose her, and this time was no different. He stormed over, snatched the urn from the priest’s hands, and tried to throw it to the ground.[]
“No!” I rushed forward to stop him and tried to grab the urn back, but I was too weak. Steven pushed me down. With a loud crash, the urn fell, and ashes scattered into the air.
