Chapter 9
The doorbell rang, pulling me from my thoughts.
But the sadness didn’t fade away.
The revenge had only just begun.
Russell and I sat across from each other on the sofa.
His lips were pressed into a thin line.
After a long silence, he stood up, walked over to me, and knelt down with a thud:
“Dear, I was wrong!”
Two years.
Since Eleanor returned two years ago, he hadn’t called me “dear” once.
The word felt so unfamiliar that it scared me.
He placed his hands on my legs, sincerely admitting his mistakes.
Russell had always said he would kneel to no one except his parents.
When he looked up, his eyes filled with tears.
Even though I knew his pain and guilt were genuine at this moment, I couldn’t forgive him.
If it weren’t for the fact that he lost the ability to have children in that car accident, and Heidi was his only biological child, he wouldn’t have come back to kneel and apologize.
The medical report I sent was a slap in his face.
He sacrificed his daughter’s life to please his “white moonlight,” only to find out she was carrying another man’s child, planning to use him as a backup.
How ridiculous.

Chapter 9
If this was Russell’s karma for betraying me, why did it have to come at the cost of my daughter’s life?
For every night I waited for Russell to come home, Heidi waited alongside me.
She longed so much for her father to become the playful and loving dad he once was.
She also desperately wanted his approval.
But in the end, all she heard were countless “bastard” and “useless.”
Heidi was a highly sensitive child.
I don’t know how hurt she must have felt during that half–day when I wasn’t there to comfort her, hearing her beloved father call her “useless” and “worthless.”
Just for a word of approval, she pushed herself to swim against a dog, ultimately losing her
life.
How ironic.
I kicked Russell over and handed him a divorce agreement.
“Let’s get divorced!”
Russell looked up suddenly, his eyes filled with overwhelming sorrow.
“Dear, I was a fool. I shouldn’t have cheated, and I shouldn’t have expected Heidi, a child, to meet adult standards…”
If I hadn’t seen his joy when he heard Eleanor was pregnant, I might have believed him for
a second.
“Russell, if I hadn’t sent you that report, would you have knelt down and admitted you were
wrong?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
“I was wrong. I really was… I don’t ask for your forgiveness, but please give me a chance to make amends.”

Even if he could speak as cloquently as a lotus, those two seconds of hesitation revealed the
truth.
His willingness to apologize now was merely a calculated decision.
No man loves a woman who betrays him, not even if she is his “white moonlight.”
“Sign the papers. Leave with nothing, and that’ll be enough.”
I had no desire to ask him any more questions.
At this point, there was no meaning in doing so.
Russell flipped through the divorce papers, laughing bitterly:
“If giving you all my assets will ease your anger, I’ll have it notarized right now.”
“We’ve shared a life together for so long; it shouldn’t end in divorce.”
I sighed deeply, responding coldly:
“This is the path you chose, so you should finish it on your knees. I won’t accompany you any further.”
“Because looking at you makes me sick!”
Russell’s once straight back slumped inch by inch.
The hope in his eyes faded bit by bit.
With trembling hands, he signed the divorce papers.
After completing the divorce procedures, he pleaded with me:
“Can I stay in Heidi’s room for a while?”
I initially wanted to refuse; he didn’t deserve to step into our daughter’s room again.
But in the end, I agreed.
