(Aria’s POV)

I nodded in response to Isabella’s knowing look, her composed expression carrying the weight of years navigating Shadow Pack politics. Her wolf’s scent held that familiar note of resigned acceptance, as if William’s unexpected visits were simply part of the complex dance of territorial power.

“He’s been restless lately,” Isabella said quietly, settling back into the sofa with baby Nolan still cradled in her

arms. “The Northern Territory Security Council project has him on edge.”

“The what?” I asked, my curiosity piqued by the formal title.

Isabella’s silver–gray eyes met mine with surprising openness. “Dominic hasn’t told you? He’s working on a

major collaborative project with the Northern Territory Security Council. It involves coordinating protection

services across multiple werewolf territories.”

My wolf stirred with concern. “That sounds incredibly complex.”

“It is,” Isabella confirmed, her voice carrying maternal pride mixed with worry. “The territorial authorities desperately need his specialized protection services. If this project succeeds, Dominic’s Shadow Pack

security company’s value could increase tenfold.”

The revelation stunned me. No wonder Dominic had been so busy lately, spending long hours in meetings

and strategy sessions. The pressure he must be under was enormous.

“He never mentioned the stakes were so high,” I said softly, feeling guilty for not recognizing the weight he’d

been carrying.

“That’s just like him,” Isabella replied with a knowing smile. “He doesn’t want you to worry. Your Dominic has

always been good at hiding his burdens behind that calm Alpha facade.”

I studied Isabella’s expression, noting the genuine affection in her voice when she spoke about her son.

Despite their strained relationship, her maternal instincts were clearly intact.

“He seems to handle pressure well,” I observed, thinking of how composed Dominic appeared even during our

most challenging moments.

“He’s learned to,” Isabella agreed. “But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect him.”

Nolan stirred in her arms, his tiny fist reaching toward her face with innocent curiosity. Isabella’s entire demeanor softened as she watched his movements, her grandmother instincts completely engaged.

“Look at those perfect little fingers,” she cooed, allowing him to grasp her thumb with surprising strength.

I smiled at the tender scene. “He’s getting stronger every day.”

“Just like his father,” Isabella said warmly, then looked up at me with sudden intensity. “Aria, I need to tell you something important.”

“What is it?”

She shifted Nolan to one arm and reached for my hand with the other, her touch gentle despite her werewolf

strength. “Dominic has changed dramatically since meeting you.”

“Changed how?” I asked, though her tone suggested she meant it positively.

“Before you came into his life, he was aimless,” Isabella explained, her voice carrying years of maternal observation. “Oh, he excelled effortlessly in his Alpha training, mastered every skill they threw at him. But he was never truly committed to anything beyond the basic pack duties.”

I found that hard to imagine. The Dominic I knew was focused, driven, passionate about protecting those he

loved.

“He seemed to be going through the motions,” Isabella continued. “His wolf had all this natural leadership ability, but it lacked direction, purpose.”

“And now?” I prompted gently.

Isabella’s smile was radiant. “Now he’s steadfast. Determined. He has someone to protect, a family to build a

future for. He’s pursuing his career earnestly because it matters to your security, to Nolan’s future.”

Her words made my chest tight with emotion. “I had no idea I’d affected him so much.”

“His protective instincts finally found their true purpose,” Isabella said, squeezing my hand. “Everything he

does now has meaning because it’s for you and Nolan.”

Nolan chose that moment to let out a small yawn, his tiny face scrunching adorably. Both Isabella and I

couldn’t help but smile at his perfect innocence.

“Dominic’s changes are all because of you, Aria,” Isabella said firmly. “I truly believe he’ll succeed with this

security council project because he’s driven by love now, not just obligation.”

“You really think so?” I asked, needing her confidence to bolster my own worries.

“I know so,” Isabella replied with absolute certainty. “A wolf fighting for his family is unstoppable.”

She paused, studying my face with maternal perception. “And speaking of your achievements, that herbal remedy company of yours is quite impressive.”

I felt heat rise to my cheeks. “It’s been growing faster than I expected.”

“Dominic told me about the expansion across multiple territories,” Isabella continued. “But you should know,

that company was his gift to you.”

“His gift?”

“He invested in it specifically to give you independence within the werewolf community,” Isabella explained. “He wanted you to have something that was entirely yours, something that would establish your reputation beyond being someone’s mate.”

The revelation touched something deep in my heart. Even before our relationship had fully developed, Dominic had been thinking about my future, my autonomy.

“The security council project will bring scrutiny,” Isabella explained. “Other packs, other Alpha leaders who might feel threatened by Dominic’s growing influence. You’ll need to present a united front.”

Her words carried the weight of experience, years of navigating the treacherous waters of pack politics as

William’s mate.

“We will,” I promised, meaning every word.

Isabella smiled, but there was sadness in her expression. “I’m glad to hear that, because I won’t be here to help guide you through it.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m going overseas for pack business,” Isabella explained, her voice carrying resignation. “European werewolf territories are requesting Shadow Pack consultation on some de matters. It may last for a few months.”

The news hit me harder than expected. Just when Isabella and I were building a real relationship, just when she was becoming the grandmother Nolan needed, she was leaving.

“A few months?” I repeated, my voice tight with disappointment.

“I’m afraid so,” Isabella confirmed. “The European packs are quite insistent, and these diplomatic relationships are crucial for Shadow Pack’s future.”

I looked down at Nolan, sleeping peacefully in his grandmother’s arms, and felt an unexpected surge of protectiveness for Isabella herself.

“Will you be safe?” I asked, surprising myself with the genuine concern in my voice.

Isabella’s eyes widened slightly, and I caught a shift in her wolf’s scent–surprise, warmth, something almost

vulnerable.

“That’s… that’s the first time anyone has asked me that,” she said softly.

“What do you mean?”

“Usually, when I travel for pack business, people ask about the mission, the politics, the outcomes,” Isabella explained, her voice growing thick with emotion. “No one has ever just asked if I’ll be safe.”

The revelation broke my heart a little. Isabella had spent years being seen as a political asset, a diplomatic tool, rather than a person worthy of care and concern.

“Of course I’m concerned about your safety,” I said firmly. “You’re Nolan’s grandmother. You’re family.” Isabella’s composure cracked slightly, and I saw tears gathering in her silver–gray eyes. “Thank you for that, Aria. More than you know.”

She cleared her throat, regaining her aristocratic bearing with visible effort. “I’ll be careful, I promise. And I have excellent protection.”

“Good,” I said simply.

“Isabella,” I called as she reached the door. “Have a safe trip. We’ll miss you.”

Her smile was radiant despite the tears threatening to spill. “I’ll miss you too. All of you.”

After Isabella left, the house felt quieter somehow. I settled Nolan in his crib and immediately reached for my

phone, needing to share this news with Dominic.

“How did it go with my mother?” Dominic’s voice carried through the phone, his tone carefully neutral.

“She’s going overseas for a few months,” I said directly. “Pack business in Europe.”

There was a pause. “I see.”

His indifferent response frustrated me, especially after Isabella’s emotional vulnerability. “Dominic, she’s your

mother. You could show some concern.”

“She’s a grown woman capable of handling herself,” Dominic replied coolly. “She’s been managing pack diplomacy longer than I’ve been alive.”

“That’s not the point,” I pressed. “She’s family.”

“Is she?” Dominic’s voice carried old pain. “Because I seem to remember twenty–odd years of distance and

neglect.”

I sighed, recognizing the defensive walls he erected whenever Isabella was mentioned. “People can change,

Dominic.”

“Maybe,” he said, but his tone suggested he didn’t believe it.

Just as I was about to respond, I heard Hunter Hayes’s voice in the background, his professional tone

carrying urgency.

“The DNA results are in,” Hunter was saying.

My breath caught. We’d been waiting for this information to finally solve the mystery of my childhood *********g.

“What did you find?” I heard Dominic ask, his attention clearly shifting to business.

“Alison Lewis is not biologically related to Dr. Marcus Lewis and Rebecca Lewis,” Hunter replied, his words carrying the weight of revelation.

My heart stopped. Through the phone, I could hear the shuffling of papers, the quiet intensity of Dominic processing this information.

“She’s not their daughter at all,” Hunter continued. “Not their niece, not any relation whatsoever.”

“And the other Lewis brothers?” Dominic’s voice was sharp with focus.
