Chapter 28
“Ashley’s POV
I sat by myself with the food in front of me, the day had sped through and there was nothing significant except for the news about Nolan’s company.
I thought I was going to be more excited about it but the truth was that I wasn’t. A few hours after the news dropped, everything had gone back to normal and I was beginning to feel like I needed to take the next step, and soon.
Xavier was supposed to be back home. We always had dinner together and he never missed it for anything in the world. I took a deep breath and picked up the fork in front of me,
“What is going on, Xavier?” I muttered under my breath. We both agreed that he was going to try and get Zoe to give up the majority of the shares from their company but even I knew that Zoe wasn’t a mere pushover. But he had also told me to have faith in him and I was trying to.
Everything had been going well, but I was beginning to feel like something was going to happen soon, something wrong. Zoe was and had always been a manipulator, and I was trying to save Xavier from that even though he trusted himself to always be in control.
I heard the door open
behind me but I didn’t bother to look around to see who it was.
“Hello, ma’am.” Laura’s voice echoed from behind as she walked towards where I was seated. I smiled and watched as she found her way to the table and sat beside me.
“Good evening, Laura.” I greeted her with a smile. I had the feeling that Xavier might not be home tonight and I didn’t want to eat alone.
“You’re right on time,” I said to her, pleased that she was here. She smiled widely at me and her eyes scanned through the table.
“Are you celebrating anything?” She asked quietly, lifting her eyes to hear my response. I chuckled softly and shook my head.
“It’s just dinner, love,” I whispered softly before taking my eyes back to the meal in front of me. Laura was amazing, she never questioned any of the instructions that I gave, and sometimes I felt guilty for always imposing myself on her, even though I was pretty sure that she didn’t think so.
She picked up her fork as well, but hesitated, looking around nervously as if she was waiting for someone.
“Is there a problem, Laura?” I asked, having the slightest idea of what was going through her mind.
“No, no… it’s just that, I was wondering if Brian was going to join us, you always tell me about how messy he was during dinner.” She said with a smile.
I nodded slowly. “He’s asleep,” I replied softly.
“He’s been doing.that lately, sleeping early. I don’t know why, but I like it. It gives me a bit of time to myself.” I said honestly. “Oh.” She muttered, as though she wasn’t satisfied with my answer. I continued eating, but after a few seconds, I paused and looked at her. She was eating slowly and I could tell that something was definitely bothering her.
“Is everything okay, Laura?” I asked for the second time. She lifted her eyes sharply and smiled at me.
“Of course.” She replied. “The meal is delicious by the way.” She added. I frowned slightly and looked back at my plate.
“I didn’t make it, the cook did,” I replied.

“Well, it’s delicious anyway” She replied with a genuine smile.
We ate in silence for a couple of minutes and all that could be heard was the gentle clinking of our forks against the plates, but then, I decided to break the silence.
“You like my brother don’t you?” I asked sharply, looking at her. She looked up sharply and opened her mouth, but the air went through the wrong pipe and she began coughing.
“Here,” I said softly, handing her a glass of water. She smiled through the discomfort before taking the glass from me.
“Thank you.” She managed to say before taking a huge gulp. It took about a minute for everything to go back to normal and then I proceeded with my question.
“You like Alpha Xavier, don’t you?” I asked again, but this time in a calm tone.
Her eyes widened in surprise but she didn’t say anything. I kept my eyes on her and after a while, she looked away.
“Don’t you think it’s a little strange that you’re asking me this?” She asked calmly, taking another sip from the glass.
I chuckled softly and dropped my fork. “Okay, I’ll change what I said and it won’t be a question anymore.”
She furrowed her brow in confusion.
“You like my brother, Alpha Xavier,” I said to her firmly.
The truth was that I was a little bit nervous. I trusted Xavier to always make the right choices but something about him being with Zoe made me nervous. She was manipulative and could get whatever she wanted, not caring what she did, and I couldn’t afford to let our plans go to ruin because of that.
Xavier had a thing for Laura, but it wasn’t enough to make a commitment. I had to make sure that his mind was fixed on someone, but it could also be me just being paranoid and fearful.
“Umm, I don’t know what to say, Mrs Robert,” Laura said nervously, but I could now see the shy smile on her face.
“You don’t have to pretend, Laura. I know.”
“I don’t know what to do about it though, I think it’s best to let things happen naturally.”
“I think so too,” I replied calmly while still smiling at her.
“You should finish your food before it gets cold,” I said, gesturing at her plate.
I was doubtful and scared about things not going according to plan and I couldn’t blame myself for that. I had to make sure that everything would happen just the way I wanted, I couldn’t afford another heartbreak.
