Chapter 31
Nolan’s POV
I opened my eyes to the faint sensation of someone’s touch. Her soft arm was wrapped around me and her fingers were placed softly on my chest. I was now wide awake and I glanced down and it was indeed her. Zoe’s hand was firmly around me and I could see the wedding ring on her finger, reflecting the morning light.
I didn’t hear her come into the room last night, because if I had, then I would have made sure that she didn’t sleep in the same bed as me. I slowly removed her hand and got out of the bed. My feet hit the cold floor and I walked towards the door without even taking a short glance at’her, and just as I was about to push the door open, I heard her voice.
“Nolan,” her soft voice echoed through the room.
I stopped in my tracks and took a deep breath. I still had my back turned against her and for a moment I pondered on whether I should say something, but the truth was that I had nothing to say to her. I placed my hand around the knob and I turned around just only so I could catch a quick glimpse of her and there she was, sitting on the bed with her eyes on me.
Her eyes were innocent but I was pretty sure that her actions weren’t. I didn’t have it in me to say something, and I wasn’t even going to give it a try.
I turned around and pushed the door open and without a word, I stepped into the hallway, shutting the door behind me. I expected her to follow, to try and talk to me, but she didn’t so I just kept on walking.
I walked downstairs, my footsteps echoing through the huge halls of the mansion. I reached the dining room and my breakfast was already on the table. A plate of bacon, eggs, and toast, just as I expected.
I quickly sat down and began to eat, not caring what it tasted like. But just after a few minutes, I heard someone behind me and before I could turn to see who it was, Zoe walked into the room. She sat down on the other end of the table and for a while, we ate in silence.
I lifted my head a couple of times to look at her, to see if she truly was remorseful, but I couldn’t see anything except for the usual blank expression. She wasn’t sorry.
“Where were you last night?” I asked, my voice colder than I intended. “Why did you have to come home so late?” I added, breaking the uncomfortable silence that had settled between us.
I kept my eyes on her and watched as she lifted her head up slowly. She hesitated for a moment, placing down her fork before finally meeting my eyes.
“I’ve been working, Nolan.” She said in a low whisper.
“I’m trying to fix things at the company, what happened was my fault and I feel like I need to-”
“Stop, Zoe.” I cut in sharply. “Just stop,” I said to her, gesturing with my hand. “I don’t want to hear about the company from you, Zoe,” I said firmly.
The expression on her face changed from sadness to surprise me.
“Nolan’s, I’m just trying to help, I accept that it’s my fault and I just—”
“Just shut the fuck up will you?” I interrupted her again. I could feel the frustration from the night before boiling through me and this was the last thing I wanted, especially when it was so early in the morning.
You don’t belong in the company anymore, Zoe,” I said to her, lowering my voice for a second. “That’s not your place anymore, so cut the crap.”
She kept her eyes on me and I could see her eyes getting moist, there was a look in her eyes and I would have assumed that

it was one of shock and sadness, but I could see that she was also angry.
“Why would you say that?” She asked quietly, wiping the tears from her eyes before they fell down her face.
I took a deep breath, placed my fork gently on the table, and looked back at her. “Because you’ve done enough, Zoe, What don’t you understand about this whole thing? The company is better off without you involved.”
She was frowning now and I could see all of It. I didn’t need to be told that she felt she deserved a spot in the company, but it wasn’t something that she could demand, it was my call and I was making it.
“I made a mistake, Nolan, can’t you see that I’m trying to fix it?, isn’t that what you want?, for me to fix the mistake that I made, don’t you always preach that you want people who can be responsible for their actions around you?, that’s exactly what I’m doing, why can’t you see it?”
“You can’t fix it, Zoe,” I said to her softly. “You can’t do anything anymore because you’re not part of it anymore.”
She smiled wryly, as though I said something funny. She reached for the glass of water beside her and picked it up and I could see her hand shaking as she brought it to her mouth.
“You can’t do this to me Nolan.” She said firmly as she put down the glass. “Not after all that I did for you, can’t.”

I had the urge to slam my fist against the table and tell her firmly that she no longer had a say in this, but I found myself holding it in.
“Everything you did was for the company, you did good, but you’ve done worse than all the good, Zoe. I’m not trying to kick you out of my life, I’m just taking full control to fit everything and then maybe I’ll consider you when I have everything back to how it used to be.”
“Okay, just let me help, somehow.” She pleaded.
I rolled my eyes and looked back at my plate. It was cold now, the food in it, and I had lost my appetite.
“It’s over, Zoe. Just do as I say and there won’t be any problems. You know better not to test me, so just listen.” I said firmly, and before she could say anything, I got up and left.
