Chapter 40
*Xavier’s POV
I walked out of Ashley’s office and began heading down the hallway. There was something different about her for the past few days and I couldn’t place a finger on it. Aside from her trying to push me to get together with Laura, something wasn’t right.
I couldn’t tell if she was nervous, because If she was, she would tell me. The past few years have seen us build trust between each other, a trust that was stronger than anything else. During her recovery in the first year, it was difficult, but the years that followed were easier, she adapted straight away into the pack and became one of us.
But now, I could feel a shift. I tried to wrap my head around it, but then an unpleasant thought crept into my mind. She was satisfied with us as a family and would do anything for Brian, but since the Ball, when she saw Nolan, she had been different. She couldn’t possibly still have feelings for him?…..
“Hell, no!” I muttered under my breath, calculating my steps as I walked, but just as I took a turn, I bumped into someone. She lost her balance and was falling backward, so I quickly wrapped my arm around her waist and saved her from falling.
“Are you okay?” I asked, watching as she lifted her face.
“Yeah, thanks to you.” She said softly, but just then our eyes met. It was Laura, and this was the second time that we would bump into each other like this.
I slowly placed her gently in her feet and lifted my head up to look at her. Her cheeks had now turned pink and she was struggling to keep eye contact.
“Thank you.” She said again, she lowered her head and was about to sneak away, but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back. She stood in front of me with her head still lowered and her muscles tense.
“How about dinner, Laura?” I asked softly, releasing my grip around her arm. She lifted her head up slowly and our eyes
met.
“W..what?” She asked, her eyes showing her confusion. I took a deep breath and let out felt for her was enough for me to do this, or if it was just the pressure from Ashley.
small smile. I didn’t know if what I
“I’ll pick you up at eight, dress well,” I said calmly, looking into her eyes, and before she could say anything, I walked off. I could feel my heart beating in a strange rhythm, something that I had experienced in a while.
But just before I could dwell on it further, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I brought it out and saw that it was Zoe. I cleared my throat and answered it.
“Hey.” Her voice cut through the line, but she didn’t sound as enthusiastic as she normally would.
“Zoe?” I replied, wondering what was going on.
“Can we meet, I’ll be at the restaurant.” She said sharply, I could hear her deep breaths and how she was struggling to sound normal.
“It’s a long drive, Zoe. You could just tell me how much progress has been made, and send over the documents.” I replied, not giving her the idea that I was going to just do as she asked.
“It’s important, Xavier. Please.” She replied, her voice breaking. I turned around, keeping my eyes on the direction that Laura went. This was going to ruin my plan, but at the same time, it was important.
“I’ll be there, just wait,” I said to her firmly.
“It’s not like I have a choice.” She replied, before hanging up. I threw my head backward and took a deep breath. Something

I parked in front of the restaurant and got in as soon as I could still had Laura in mind, but with each passing second, it was highly unlikely that my meeting with her would be possible
I walked straight to the spot where we last sat, but it was empty.
“What the hell?” I muttered in confusion, but just then I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder.
“Alpha Xavier?” The young man asked, smiling like it was his first day.
“You’re reservation with Mrs. Cross is this way. Sh. “as his first day.
waiting for you.” He said, gesturing with his hand in another direction.
I moved without saying any words and after a few so we finally got there. It was a much private space and was definitely the place to get business done without any interference-
I could see her from where I stood, sitting by herself, so I walked towards the table where she was sitting.
“What’s going on, Zoe?” I asked, taking my seat. She had a glass on her lips and held a finger to my face, asking for me to hold on as she gulped down its contents, and when she was done, she placed it on the table and smiled at me.
She was completely wasted and it didn’t take too long for me to realize that.
“Thank you for coming, Xavier. You’re the only one that’s there for me. Only you, Xavier.” She said, unable to keep her eyes steady.
I noticed a stack of documents, sitting in front of her and I reached out to take them. They all had the crest of TechCorp on them as I flipped through them one by one, it was exactly what I thought it was and they were all there.
“There are exactly twenty people holding shares in the company, and everyone sold theirs to me. I was able to convince some of them. Believe me, it was easy, but some… I did as you asked, showed them things of themselves that they wouldn’t like the public to know about…. And other things that I can’t really say.”
I couldn’t tell how drunk she was, but so far she knew exactly what she was saying
to me.
“There is now a significant shift, Xavier. Just like you wanted. It’s all yours and you’re going to fix it just as you promised.”
I didn’t want to get overwhelmed, even though there was proof in front of me.
“And Nolan?” I asked calmly.
She smiled sadly, picked up a bottle in front of her, and poured it into the glass, but just before she could drink it, I grabbed her arm and looked into her eyes.
“And Nolan,” I asked again, my voice low and firm.
“It’s all there,” she said softly. “I have access to his files and I managed to do the transfer. It got to him as a financial investment from a marketing company, the one you put in your proposal. The money is his, he just doesn’t know it yet. Nolan’s stake is now yours, and it’s the same with everyone else.”
I–leaned backward and folded my arms, staring at her with genuine admiration. I had doubts that she wouldn’t be able to, but I was wrong after all, she handled it just perfectly.
“Well done, Zoe,” I said to her softly, watching as she emptied the bottle. Nolan had definitely made a decision that she didn’t like, hence she was acting this way, but I couldn’t care less and I didn’t want to know about it.
She lifted her eyes and looked at me.

“I’ve done all that you asked and I know that you’re going to keep to your words and fix it.”
“I will,” I replied, keeping my eyes on her. She smiled wryly and pushed herself forward, pressing her chest against the table.
“Now, are you going to fuck me?” She asked, staring at me like a hungry lion.
