*Nolan’s POV*

I was still sitting behind my desk, doing nothing except imagining all that I was going to do if I found whoever it was that was responsible for this. I had decided not to call anyone or to try and make any offers to investors, if I was going to go down, then I had to do it with some bit of pride left.

The door opened again and I didn’t bother to check who it was. “I thought I told you to leave?” I said, finally lifting my he to see Lisa, but it wasn’t her. It was Zoe, walking towards me.

wasn’t expecting her to be here as I wasn’t excited by it as well. She stopped in front of my desk, her chest rising and falli wasn’t and a sad smile on her face. She was looking different from the last time I saw her and who would have thought that this would happen, especially between us?

“Nolan,” she said softly, supporting her stance with my desk. “I heard what happened. I couldn’t stay back anymore.”

I let out a heavy sigh and leaned back against my chair. “And what exactly did you hear, my dear Zoe?” I asked her, my voi calm.

She rolled her eyes, as though she had already given up. She pushed the chair out and attempted to sit on it.

“I didn’t ask you to sit,” I said, halting her movement. She moved backward and nodded, accepting her fate.

“I don’t need your help, Zoe,” I said finally, my voice free of any emotion. “And what makes you think that you can help me You did this.”

Zoe shook her head and adjusted her feet. “But I can’t just sit around and do nothing,” she said stubbornly. “I spoke to my father and he’s willing to do something to help. He said he’ll invest fifty million dollars. He doesn’t care about anything else as long as he gets the capital back, he’s good.”

I kept my eyes on her for a moment, processing her words. Fifty million dollars? The figure wasn’t that bad, but compared t what we were going through and how much we had lost, even a billion dollars would be like a drop in the ocean. Besides, Zoe’s father? Hell no!

I turned my eyes back to her and burst into laughter, unable to hold it back anymore. The echoes of my laughter went through the room, the subtle vibration a welcome rhythm.

“What were we talking about, Zoe, runs into billions of dollars. We’ve gone beyond crisis mode, it’s a disaster now.”

I pushed myself up from the chair and began walking towards her. She instinctively took a step back, her eyes widening in fear.

I continued walking towards her and she kept moving backward until her back hit the wall.

“What do you think this is, Zoe?” I asked menacingly.

“Do you think this is one of Daddy’s little games that a few coins can solve?” She remained still, not talking.

I leaned closer, my face just a few inches away from hers and I could smell the familiar scent of her perfume, and it still had something on me.

“You should leave, Zoe,” I whispered. “Before I do something I might regret.”

I pulled away, turning my back and heading back to my table, and I heard the door click shut. I sank into the chair and resumed my meaningless stare at the blank screen.

Things used to be much simpler and I could get things done with just the click of my fingers, but now it seemed like every power I had had been stripped away from me, and even though I still was the CEO, it felt like I wasn’t and someone else. somewhere, was pulling the strings, and making everything go against me.

I opened my eyes and saw that the lights had come on and I knew what it meant. I had slept off staring at something that wasn’t going to change and it was already night.

I stood up from my chair and took my jacket, before heading out. Walking out of my office, I could see it almost emptied out, except for some of the people who had to be there.

“Lisa,” I called out, she stopped what she was doing and turned around to see me.

“Si. She said, standing up. She walked around and then was standing in front of me.

“I thought you’d be gone by now,” I said to her. It wasn’t my business, but the last thing that I could do for someone who cared about the company was to act like I actually cared about her.

“I noticed that you were still in your office, so I decided to wait until you were done…you know, before I headed home. But also, I just used the opportunity to look at other things.” She added, pointing at the monitor on her desk.

I squinted my eyes to figure out what she had been looking at and just like I predicted, it was all meaningless numbers going through the screen and the only thing it did was to remind me of how much of a mess we were in.

I turned my eyes back to her and smiled wryly, she just needed an excuse to stay back. Her life was probably as boring as my ability to fix things nowadays.

Our eyes locked for a while and I could feel my blood boil. I offered her my hand and smiled.

“What do you say about another dinner tonight, and probably do something worthwhile,” I said to her, she remained in one spot, just like she did before, going through the schedules in her head.
