I wandered the city streets aimlessly.
With only two weeks left, what was I supposed to do?
My body was already running on empty. Even walking felt like a battle.
What else was left?
Maybe just to take in the world one last time.
Feel the sunlight on my skin. Smell the fresh–cut grass.
My phone buzzed.
It was a message from Sophia.
Sophia: Lillian, I came here with James and William.
Sophia: Can we meet?
Sophia: I want to apologize.
I almost forgot she existed.
I thought for a moment, then sent the time and location to both James and William.
When I arrived, Sophia was already waiting. She beamed when she saw me.
“Lillian, I guess you’ve finally calmed down.”
“You put on such a show, forcing William to divorce me, and now you finally got what you wanted.”
Her smile was fake, but her words dripped with venom.
“If it weren’t for you, my life wouldn’t have fallen apart.”
“Lillian, you really are a nasty piece of work.”
I wasn’t in the mood for her games. I cut straight to the point.

Her smile vanished. Hatred twisted her delicate features.

“And yet, I never got to carry James‘ child. So why should you?”
“The heir of the Carter family? That child was never meant to exist.”
My breath caught in my throat.
“You’re saying… you did it on purpose?”
Sophia threw her head back, laughing maniacally.
“Of course I did.”
“I pushed you because I wanted your baby dead.”
The room spun, my vision blurred.

I hit her across the face with all the strength I had left.
A red mark bloomed instantly on her cheek.
Sophia gasped, then immediately shifted into her helpless act, tears welling up in her eyes.
“Lillian, how could you? Just because you’re jealous of me-”

“James? William?”
James‘ eyes burned red with fury.

“You killed my child.”
William’s hands balled into fists. “Sophia, I was blind for years.”

She hadn’t expected them to hear the whole conversation.
When she asked to meet, I had sent them both the time and place.
I wanted them to see the real Sophia–the one they had worshiped for years.
