Sweat clung to my skin, but Carter didn’t seem to care. He held me close and whispered, “Don’t be scared, Zocy.”
How could I not be?
The thought of the killer still roaming free haunted me Knowing my body had been mutilated left me restless, I was unable to sleep.
The police hadn’t made any progress, and I couldn’t stop wondering what Anna had done with my organs.
I sat in silence, consumed by my thoughts, while Carter’s expression grew darker in the shadows of the
room.
By morning, I felt a little calmer, but something was off–Carter wasn’t in the room.
I had grown used to seeing him there when I woke up. Had he left early for work?
As I made my way downstairs, I overheard his stern tone, something I rarely witnessed..
Sitting in his wheelchair, Carter slammed a stack of papers onto Luke’s head.
“Is this your work as CEO of Bolton Group? If I’d known you’d screw up this badly, I never would’ve given you the job!”
Sheila made a show of trying to persuade, while Adam looked embarrassed. He pleaded, “Carter, Luke has. been distraught since Chloe’s sudden disappearance. That’s why he made a mistake with the documents.”
Carter sneered. “Are you blaming Chloe for his incompetence?”
He knew the truth about Luke’s betrayal after my death–he even had uncensored, high–resolution photos, of Luke and Anna.
Adam seemed to remember that, falling silent and glancing at Jeffrey for help.
Jeffrey, however, simply pursed his lips and said, “I’ve already handed control of the Boltons to you, Carter. How you handle it is your choice.
Carter’s glare locked onto Luke. “I’ll call a shareholders meeting to remove him from his position and
elect a new CEO.
Panic flashed across Luke’s face. He must have believed Carter wouldn’t dare to do anything to him because of his mother’s past favor.
“Uncle Carter, you can’t do this to me!”
Carter’s voice was icy. “The CEO of Bolton Group must be competent. You need time to recover, so consider this an opportunity to rest.”
The words sounded polite, but everyone understood it was Carter’s way of stripping him of power. Luke, now clinging to his last bit of authority within the Boltons, was furious.

He glared at Carter and spat, “Why dig up old grudges now? You’re letting personal bias cloud your judgment.”
Carter snorted coldly. “If I wanted revenge. I’d send you back to your mother’s womb.”
I had never seen Carter so enraged. What had provoked him?
He seemed ready to say more. But when he noticed me his expression softened.
“Breakfast is ready,” he said warmly, “Eat something. You didn’t eat last night.”
The tension in the room was suffocating, so I quickly headed to the dining room.
Luke deserved everything he got
After a good night’s sleep my emotions had settled. Carter asked me to wait for him, and I trusted him enough to do so.
After breakfast, he suggested we go shopping for New Year’s gifts. With no pressing matters to attend to. I agreed.
I enjoyed being around Carter. He was reliable, thoughtful, and never let me down.
I couldn’t help but wonder what my life would have been like if Carter had been the one to save me back then. Maybe I could have avoided the sc“mbag, Luke.
If I had married Carter in my past life, we might even have had children by now.
“What’s on your mind?” Carter’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.
I blushed slightly. “Nothing.”
“Feeling better today?” he asked, his tone light but concerned. “You gave me quite a scare last night.
I offered him a small smile. “Sorry about that. My emotions got the better of me.”
He ruffled my hair gently. “What’s done is done. Let’s focus on what’s ahead.”
Soon after, he suggested we visit a jewelry store. I quickly tried to decline, I already have plenty at home. and Jeffrey gave me a whole set recently.”
“No woman ever complains about having too much jewelry. Your only job today is to shop till you drop.”
I teased him. “Do you have a lot of money?”
His smirk widened. “More than enough to support you, darling.”
Shopping wasn’t something I often had time for. During my school years, I was always busy with my studies. After starting work, my schedule revolved around frequent business trips.
Even when I was free, Luke would come up with excuses to avoid spending time with me. He never even humored the idea of a casual outing like shopping. He’d rather be with Anna.

Most of my clothing and accessories were pre–selected by my assistant months in advance, which was efficient but left me missing out on the little joys of picking things myself.
Unlike Luke, Carter was different. Despite his limited mobility, he stayed by my side patiently, offering thoughtful feedback. He had a way of making every moment enjoyable.
At the store, I spotted a necklace that caught my eye, but the salesperson hesitated. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Bolton. This is a limited–edition piece, and it’s already been reserved by another customer. A new staff member mistakenly put it on display.”
“Oh, I see. In that case, I-“I was about to let it go when familiar voice came from the doorway.
“Hurry up. I’m busy.”
“Do you think I want to be here with you?”
Turning toward the entrance. I was surprised to see Anna and Ashley walking in.
The Hudsons had no choice but to go through with the engagement, even after everything that happened. If they backed out now, people would accuse them of abandoning the Sanders during a tough time.
So, despite their dislike for Anna, the wedding preparations continued.
When they noticed me, their expressions shifted. Ashley wasted no time pulling Anna over and plastering on a fake smile.
“What a surprise to see you here, Mr. and Mrs. Bolton.”
He shot Anna a sharp look. “Say something! Are you mute?”
The saying that it took one villain to handle another seemed fitting here.
“Greetings, Mr. Bolton, Mrs. Bolton,” Anna greeted us stiffly, her reluctance evident.
She then turned to the staff and casually instructed them to prepare her necklace for wrapping.
I couldn’t help but smirk. “Ms. Sander, don’t you think fate has an odd sense of humor? I just happened to admire this necklace, only to find out it was yours,”
Anna was about to respond, but Ashley quickly jumped in, his tone overly eager. “If Mrs. Bolton likes it, let me take the credit and call it a wedding gift from us.”
Anna’s eyes widened in disbelief. “That’s my necklace! What gives you the right to hand it over to someone else?
Ashley sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. “You’re already the Hudsons‘ daughter–in–law. What’s the difference between yours and mine? Didn’t your family reach you that once you marry, everything you own belongs to your husband? Now go pay for it and hand it to Mrs. Bolton.”
It was ironic. Anna had taken so much from me in the past, even my wedding jewelry. Now, the situation had flipped.
Toying with the jewelry box, I let out a small, amused chuckle. “Ms. Sander, I hope you’re not too upset that I took your necklace.”

“Upset?” Ashley interjected with exaggerated politeness Of course not, Mrs. Bolton. She should feel honored that you liked it.”
Turning back to Anna, I smiled. “Ms. Sander, it seems you and Mr. Hudson make quite the pair.”
One was shamelessly opportunistic, the other coldly calculating
I couldn’t help but wonder how long it would take before they turned on each other.
