Though Carter appeared confident and strong, he had grown up without the love of a family, leaving him in a lonely world.
Having never felt love as a child, he often doubted himself over even the smallest things I said.
It broke my heart to see him like this. He was so perfect, yet he had spent years locked away in a dark attic, isolated.
While I was full of life and energy, Carter could only listen to my laughter from the shadows, unable to join in.
Perhaps it was my carefree spirit that healed his loneliness, making him yearn for the light, which led him to love me for all these years.
Even as he grew older, his heart remained in that attic, quietly watching over me.
I wrapped my arms around his waist gently, trying to plant the seed of love in his heart.
“Carter, don’t doubt yourself. You’ve been good to me,” I whispered.
“Chloe…” he murmured above my head.
We were two souls, both scarred by hardship, healing each other.
It felt as if the world were a giant stage, with Carter and I standing together, sharing our hearts.
In the next room, a dramatic scene was unfolding.
It was obvious Bill hadn’t been much with Monica, making her look like she hadn’t seen a man in years.
Watching her, I couldn’t help but think of a hungry animal eyeing food after days of starvation.
She pounced on him eagerly, but I couldn’t help but notice his round belly, which nearly made me gag.
Just as I was about to look away, a hand gently covered my eyes.
“Don’t look,” Carter whispered.
I turned to face him. “Are you jealous?”
He looked uncomfortable, avoiding my gaze. “I just don’t want you seeing other men’s bodies.”
Carter was tough and decisive with enemies. But in front of me, he was unexpectedly gentle and obedient. The contrast was so adorable it made me want to tease him.
I leaned closer to his ear and whispered, “If I can’t look at other men, can I look at you?”
Soon, I saw a faint blush on his ears. Before I could react, he pulled me into his embrace. “Chloe, you asked for this.”
I went from being a spectator to a participant in our private moment. But with Carter, indulging for a

I had to admit, that despite Zack Harrison being nearly 50, he still had the charm to attract Monica. No wonder she was so taken by him.
We had come here to learn about their plans against the Gardners, but instead, we were getting a live demonstration.
At first, I felt a bit awkward, but then I bit my finger and watched with growing interest, like a student trying to learn, commenting, “Can it truly be done like this?”
I glanced at Carter and saw that he was watching intently too. As soon as our eyes met, he quickly looked away, but I could see his ears turning red.
I threw myself into his arms. “Are you secretly studying too?”
He cleared his throat. “Studying … a little.”
“Don’t tell me you don’t have a hidden folder on your computer,” I teased.
I remembered a time back in school when a boy had his presentation materials swapped out, only to find a folder full of inappropriate content.
After that, he became quiet and introverted for years, and everyone teased him about it.
Carter was 33, and it was hard to believe he had never watched anything like that.
He looked away. “I’m usually busy with work. I don’t have time for things like that.”
He had spent so many years away from the Bolton Residence, recuperating abroad, repaying his sister–in- law for saving his life, and allowing Luke to be with me.
He built his career through his hard work, without relying on anyone. I couldn’t imagine how tough it must have been for him in a foreign country.
I gently rubbed his neck, my voice soft with a hint of pity. “Now you can think about it, Carter. We have plenty of time to figure it out.”
Later that night, after showering, I found a plate of late–night chicken wings on the table.
Carter had set everything up thoughtfully. He looked up and smiled. “Are you hungry?”
I wrapped my arms around his waist. “Carter, how can you be so wonderful?”
“Because you deserve it.”
I smiled back. Then I’ll enjoy it.”
Being with him felt like a perfect romance, free from the complications of marriage.
But then, Monica’s voice interrupted the moment. “Philippa might be pregnant. Bill’s been spending all his time with her, and that crazy Zoey takes everything from me and Sadie.”
I paused mid–bite as I was suddenly mentioned.

I glanced at the TV, where Monica was cuddled up in Zack’s arms.

If they were 20 years younger, this scene could have been quite romantic. But seeing Monica’s fake, silicone–enhanced face against the burly man’s chest made me feel physically uncomfortable.
I quickly turned away and focused on the chicken wings again.
“Pregnant? That’s bad news,” Zack’s voice came, sounding frustrated. “You’re too foolish. After all these years, you still haven’t gotten a marriage certificate from Bill. If you did, you could claim half his assets- half of the Gardners!”
I didn’t even need to look to picture his greedy expression. Truly, it was impossible not to compare.
Bill might be a scumbag, but he still had the appearance and charm of a powerful CEO. There was a clear difference between someone born into wealth and someone who had made his sudden fortune.
I could imagine that Zack, who had started from nothing, must have indulged himself once he got rich, living a life of excess.
But Monica, with her poor taste, still adored him. I couldn’t understand it.
“If Philippa has a son, everything we’ve worked for will be wasted,” Zack added.
Monica looked nervous. “What should we do then?”
“There are two ways,” Zack replied coldly. “First, we find a way to get rid of Philippa’s baby.”
As soon as I heard that, I instantly lost my appetite.
Monica asked, “What’s the second way?”
“You need to win Bill’s trust, get him to divorce Philippa, and then marry him. After all these years, I’m done waiting. Monica, get him some insurance.”
“W–what do you want to do?”
I glanced at Zack, and his expression sent a chill down my spine.
“After you marry Bill, we’ll figure out a way to kill him. That way, the Gardners will be ours!”
