Shana put down her fork and moved the small table asile. Still feeling weak, she lay back down.

Closing her eyes, but unable to fall asleep, she picked up her phone. The screen showed dozens of missed calls, most from Cyrus and two from Cheryl.
Opening WhatsApp, their messages popped up.
Cyrus asked, “Shana, are you feeling better?”
Cheryl wrote, “Bae, I’m so sorry I missed your call. Henry told me you had a fever. How are you? Let me know when you’re awake.”
At least someone truly cared for her, which warmed Shana’s heart.
She was about to reply to their messages and assured them she was fine when Cyrus’s call came through.
The moment she answered, Cyrus’s soothing voice came through the phone.
“Shana, how are you feeling? If your fever hasn’t gone down, maybe you should come to the hospital for some tests. I can arrange everything for you.”
Shana smiled and said, “You don’t have to trouble yourself. My fever’s gone. I also want to thank you for coming over yesterday and giving me medicine and a shot. I was so afraid I might lose my mind from the fever.”
She guessed her temperature must have reached 104°F yesterday.
Honestly, while she and Cyrus were on good terms, they weren’t at the point where they could call each other at midnight for a favor. Still, Cyrus was a good guy–probably a doctor’s compassionate heart at play.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Then Cyrus spoke again. “Actually, I wasn’t the one who gave you the medicine or the shot yesterday.”
“What?”
That was the last thing Shana expected to hear. She instinctively said, “It wasn’t you? Could it have been Henry? However, in our three–year marriage, I don’t recall him possessing that skill.”
Maybe it was something about her words that amused him, because she heard Cyrus laugh softly into the phone as he covered his mouth with a clenched fist.
He then explained, “No, I was at the gate of your villa but couldn’t get in. I called Henry. He likely didn’t want to disturb me, so he said he had called another doctor. Once the female doctor arrived, I left.”
Shana couldn’t believe what she was hearing. In a doctor’s mind, aren’t patients gender–neutral? Cyrus was already at the door, so why call in another doctor and make things complicated?
“Why not just use you, the doctor on hand? What was that sc*m … Henry thinking? This doesn’t sound right.”

She stopped herself, realizing something. Her voice dropped to a lower tone. “Dr. Grant, you and Henry aren’t really close, are you? It feels like there’s some sort of tension between you two.”
She had seen how Henry and Damon interacted, and it wasn’t like this. Their relationship was solid.
Shana couldn’t quite figure it out, though she was really curious. She couldn’t hold back anymore and finally asked, “You two aren’t having some sort of fake friendship, are you?”
After saying it, she realized how unlikely that seemed. their relationship was really bad, with no trust, Henry wouldn’t have entrusted Duncan’s treatment to Cyrus without hesitation.
Duncan was the person Henry cared about the most.
She immediately regretted her question, fearing she might have offended him. Surprisingly, Cyrus didn’t seem bothered. Instead, he answered honestly, “We’re real, but because we both once competed for the same thing we loved, there’s definitely some rivalry there.”
Holy cow!
That is quite the dramatic story!
What could possibly have been so precious that it could make two accomplished men fight for it, to the point where they both ignored their friendship to compete for it?
Shana’s curiosity was piqued. She sat up, propped herself up with a pillow, and shifted into a comfortable position to hear more.
She carefully considered the situation: for men, what mattered most was either money or women. Money wasn’t an issue for these two powerful men, so it had to be a woman.
Could the “precious thing” be referred to as that homewrecker?
The thought sent a chill down her spine. She couldn’t bring herself to confront that possibility, so she decided to ask directly instead of overthinking.
Clearing her throat, she cautiously asked, “So, in the end, who won?”
Cyrus’s usual calm voice held a hint of regret as he replied, “I was one step too late.”
“What!”
So Henry had won the ‘homewrecker‘ after all? Her guess was spot on.
The woman who had caught Cyrus’s eye, the one everyone was curious about, turned out to be Kate.
Shana’s mind buzzed.
She couldn’t understand what kind of charm Kate had that could make Henry fall so hard for her–let alone keep Cyrus, such a good man, hooked too.
It seemed she had underestimated Kate’s allure.
At that moment, Shana’s view of Cyrus shattered a bit. No one was perfect, after all. Cyrus was great but clearly had poor taste.

She couldn’t bring herself to say anything positive about Kate, so she comforted him. “Dr. Grant, it was her loss for not choosing you.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Cyrus did something she hadn’t expected–he firmly corrected her, his tone serious. “She’s a good person.”
This conversation could not continue.
Earlier, Henry had left to answer Kate’s call, and now Cyrus was still talking about her–both of them hurting her badly. She couldn’t bear it.
Fortunately, a nurse called Cyrus away for surgery. He gave her a few reminders and hung up.
Just as Shana set the phone down, she saw Henry walk in, now in casual loungewear instead of his shirt and suit pants.
She was surprised. Shana had thought the sc*undrel would rush to Kate’s side the moment he got her call, as he always did.
Like a loyal dog, he’d wag his tail and run off when summoned by the homewrecker.
But now, it seemed like he was staying.
This was first.
Shana felt a ripple in her calm heart.
His hair, no longer slicked back, softened his usual sharp look. The white sweater he wore caught the sunlight from behind him, creating a strangely peaceful atmosphere.
He glanced at the half–eaten, now cold bowl of grits and furrowed his brow. His tone was filled with some unspoken emotion. “Who were you talking to when you didn’t even finish your meal?”
She claimed to be hungry, but she also refused to eat.
Shana didn’t pick up on his hidden feelings. She found his question amusing and replied irritably, “I don’t ask who you talk to, so it’s none of your business who I talk to, Mr. Floyd.”
Henry couldn’t fathom how she could switch emotions so rapidly.
But not wanting to argue with a patient, he bit back his frustration and calmly asked, “What’s wrong now?” “Nothing. I just want to sleep,” Shana replied coldly.
Shana didn’t want to waste any more words. If he really cared, he wouldn’t have so freely answered Kate’s call right in front of her.
He didn’t even try to hide it, so why should she?
She lay down, pulled the blanket over herself, turned her back to him, and silently issued an unspoken order for him to leave.
Henry’s face darkened completely.

He stood there for a long time before finally managing to get out one stiff question. “You know what day it is in three days, right?”
Shana’s thick eyelashes fluttered slightly, and for a moment, her eyes were confused before realization set in.
It was the wedding of Duncan’s close friend, Roger Keller’s grandson, Eric Keller. Since Duncan couldn’t attend, he had asked Henry to take Shana in his place.
That explained all the extra care Henry had been showing–taking care of her, cooking grits, even showering her with money. He just wanted her to get better in time for the event.
Shana placed a hand on her chest, the small ripple in her heart turning into calm water once more.
With her usual professionalism, she answered coldly, “I remember, Mr. Floyd. Don’t worry. I’ll be fully recovered and ready to go with you to the wedding in three days.”
Henry clenched his hands by his sides.
His lips moved as if to say something, but all he did was coldly mutter, “I’d better not see you acting sick again.”
