Chapter 9
The day I received my graduation certificate, Wesley took me to a French restaurant I had always liked to celebrate.
Just before we reached the entrance, I stopped in my tracks:
“How did you know I liked this restaurant?”
I squinted at Wesley.
“I just like it,” he said nonchalantly.
“Well, we’re not eating here today. I want to try some street food.”
Wesley looked a bit shocked, but then replied,
“If you want to eat it, I’ll take you.”
I remembered how I had once mentioned to Vincent that I wanted to try the street–side. barbecue, but he had refused.
He frowned and said in a stiff tone,
“Margot, with your princess palate, you can’t eat that kind of unsanitary food.”
“And with how wealthy our family is, why lower your living standards?”
At the time, I thought he was just looking out for me.
I never realized that it was a form of terrifying control over me.
Wesley didn’t force me, but instead took me to a small shop in an alley..
The place was bustling with customers coming and going, noisy and lively.
“Hey? Isn’t that Margot?”
As I was eating, a loud exclamation interrupted me.

I turned around to see Ella, arm–in–arm with Vincent, shouting exaggeratedly
Nearly everyone in the room looked at me with confusion.
Ella, looking down at me, sneered,
“How far have you fallen, eating street food now? Without our Vincent supporting you, you’re just a useless person who only deserves to eat street food!”
I was about to stand up and argue with her, but Wesley grabbed my wrist to stop me…
