Chapter 7
I talked it over with my mom, and we decided to try and get Julian’s mom to come out from
her hometown.
We figured the best way to do that was to use a pregnancy as an excuse to get her to come to the city and take care of me. It was perfect, since Julian’s been making me take the pill every day.
If I got pregnant now, it would totally throw him for a loop and give us a chance to catch him buying the pills red–handed.
No sooner said than done.
I went to the drugstore downstairs and bought five pregnancy tests. I messed with a couple of them, picking the two that looked the most legit.
Now we just had to wait for him to spill the beans.
5:10 PM.
Julian finally showed up.
I had texted him the hotel room number/earlier and told him to come straight there.
When I opened the door, Julian was standing there with a bouquet of roses and a milk tea.
“Did you miss me, babe?”
I took the roses, meeting his smile.
“Of course, I missed you.”
“Oh right, babe, what surprise do you have for me?”
I took Julian’s hand, blushing a little.
“You’ll see when you come in.”

Chapter 7
My mom was already in place.
Julian was surprised to see her.
“Mom? What are you doing here?”
My mom, a retired theater actress, was a natural. You couldn’t tell she was faking it for a
second.
“Of course I should be here! Who else is gonna take care of Emily?”
“You’re gonna be a dad, you know!”
I smoothly pulled out the prepared pregnancy test and handed it to Julian.
“Honey, I’m pregnant~”
Julian froze. He didn’t speak for a good thirty seconds, and when he finally did, his face showed no joy, only disbelief.
“How is that possible?!”
I played dumb. “Why wouldn’t it be possible? Don’t you want to be a dad?”
He quickly forced a smile. “Honey, of course I do. It’s just that we haven’t had kids for so long. It’s so sudden, I just didn’t process it right away.”
My mom walked over and touched my belly, smiling. “Well, this just means it was meant to
be.”
“My friend’s daughter is childfree and always on birth control, but guess what? She still got pregnant. Must be fate, right?”
To really sell it, I told him that I had suddenly thrown up during an activity this morning.
The doctor, after finding out I was married, insisted I take a pregnancy test first. Yesterday’s was just a regular game, but today’s was more intense and not safe for pregnant women.
So I took the test, and wouldn’t you know it, I was pregnant!
Chapter 7
I told him the doctor took a blood sample and the results would be back tomorrow.
Julian didn’t suspect a thing.
He just stood there, the pregnancy test clutched in his hand, his brow furrowed in thought.
Back home, I continued to bask in the glow of my fabricated pregnancy.
Just as I reached for my “vitamins,” Julian’s hand shot out to stop me.
“Don’t take those pre–natal vitamins now that you’re pregnant. Let’s get you some new
ones.”
Maybe, just maybe, in that fleeting moment, a flicker of genuine concern for the “baby” flickered within him.
