Chapter 4
I didn’t deny it, nor did I expect that Gavin and Jeremy would meet this way. I’d only been working at Gavin’s company for less than a year, and during that time, Jeremy rarely came to pick me up, so they’d never crossed paths.
During the wish–making part of the celebration, Gavin leaned in close to me again, grinning as he asked if I could guess what his wish was. I absentmindedly responded, “What wish?” since I felt uncomfortable under Jeremy’s constant gaze.
But Gavin’s next words almost made me choke on my cake. “My wish is for you to become my wife.”
He didn’t say it too loudly, but just loud enough for both Georgia and Jeremy, who were seated nearby, to hear clearly. I involuntarily looked over at Jeremy, only to see him staring at me, eyes red with frustration. Georgia quickly scooped a piece of cake and fed it to Jeremy, purposely blocking his line of sight.
Gavin, however, acted oblivious, continuing to offer me food. I knew he was doing this on purpose, saying it loud enough for Jeremy and putting on a show for him. And it clearly worked–Jeremy looked furious.
As the gathering ended, Jeremy pulled me aside and insisted on taking me home. I declined, saying it was out of his way. Just then, Gávin walked over, put his arm around my shoulders, and led me to his car, throwing a challenging glance at Jeremy. “No need for you to trouble yourself with my girlfriend. You should focus on your own.”
Jeremy clenched his fists in anger but was helpless, left only to watch as we drove away.
When Gavin dropped me off, he suddenly said seriously, “Move in with me tomorrow.
We’re getting our marriage license in two days anyway.”
“It’s not safe for you to live alone.”
I hesitated, but Gavin quickly added, leaving no room for refusal, “Alright, it’s settled. I’ll come help you move tomorrow.” With that, he drove off.
After thinking it over, I figured moving in was inevitable anyway, so a few days wouldn’t

make much of a difference.
Just as I finished showering, I heard the sound of the door lock turning, and my heart jumped to my throat–1 thought it was a thief. But when the door opened, I saw it was Jeremy. He immediately walked over and held me tightly in his arms, resting his chin on my shoulder, his voice carrying a trace of vulnerability. “Amanda, stop pretending with him. I’m really hurting tonight. Seeing you with him made my heart ache so much.”
I’d thought I was the only one who felt that pain. Turns out, he did too!
I pushed him away and looked him in the eye, about to tell him about my upcoming marriage with Gavin. But before I could speak, his phone rang. He hesitated but eventually answered. Although he didn’t put it on speaker, I could still hear Georgia’s voice clearly.
“Jeremy, I’m so scared. I had a nightmare; I relived that day. I’m terrified…
At her words, his previously relaxed expression tensed up with worry. “Amanda, I need to
go
for a bit. Can we talk when I get back? Everything I’m doing is for us–I haven’t betrayed our relationship. Please trust me.
I didn’t understand what he meant by “for us,” but to me, his actions over the years already
felt like a betrayal.
After Jeremy left, Georgia sent me a message:
“Amanda, you owe me this. With just one word from me, Jeremy will always come back to me. Want to know why?”
