Chapter 13 The Argument
As Celeste drove away, Nathaniel’s words echoed in her mind.
He said she had betrayed him?
She let out a bitter laugh. Nathaniel was truly shameless. He was the one who cheated, yet he accused her of betrayal.
Celeste took a deep breath, pushing the pain in her heart aside. Even after lying at home for a month, she still couldn’t figure out where things had gone wrong.
Her phone rang, secured on the dashboard. She swiped to
answer.
A loving voice came through. “My dear girl.”
“Grandpa,” Celeste replied, her voice languid.
“The violet diamond is in hand. I’ve arranged for a master jeweler to craft a set of jewelry for you. In a month, you’ll be turning twenty–three.”
A faint, nonchalant smile touched Celeste’s lips. “Grandpa, if I remember correctly, our family turned over a new leaf two decades ago. Are you sure this violet diamond isn’t connected

to something shady? I’d hate to wear it around my neck and end up getting chased.”
“You little rascal, you really see through everything, don’t
you? I once fought hard to make a name for myself in the underworld, and now I’m fighting just as hard to forget it. But here you are, reminding me.
“That violet diamond has a significant history. By acquiring it, you should know you’ve officially returned to the Imperial Estate,” Quentin said earnestly.
“And another thing, your four–year promise to me is up. I
didn’t ask where you went during those years, but from today onward, you better pull yourself together. I’m retiring, so don’t make any trouble for me.”
Celeste paused, then carefully asked, “Grandpa, do you want a great–grandchild?”
Her grandfather sighed. “Why does it sound like you got dumped? People say when a woman gets dumped,
it’s because of her looks. But you’re beautiful, rich, and talented. How could you get dumped? Are you bringing me a great–grandchild or what?”
Celeste thought, “Can we pretend I never said anything?”
“Come on, girl, it’s just a lousy man. Doesn’t inheriting the

family business sound more appealing? You’re a fox who hasn’t fully grown into her wiles yet–just too young. Give it a few years, and Grandpa guarantees that all the young men in Kinston will be falling at your feet.”
Celeste sighed inwardly.
Quentin was getting more modern with
age.
Then he suddenly asked, “Celly, a few months ago, you brought back an injured man who still hasn’t woken up. Is he
the father of your child?”
