Eden’s lips curled into a knowing smile, but before he could say anything, Rosalie shot him down. “Come on, this isn’t some tragic romance novel. What’s next? Regret, redemption, a desperate chase to win me back?”
Rosalie dismissed his theory without hesitation and didn’t take Eden’s words seriously.
In her opinion, if Julian was really feeling reluctant just because she had brought up divorce, then getting his heart was way too easy.
She had spent an entire lifetime chasing after him, only to be met with indifference. How could signing a divorce paper suddenly change everything?
If that were true, then all those years of devotion and all those moments of heartbreak in her previous life would be nothing more than a ridiculous joke.
Her gaze flickered downward as she casually picked up another pie with her fork. “Besides, his ex is back. As his substitute, I should’ve taken the hint and left a long time ago. I don’t want to get in the way of their reunion.”
She sounded indifferent, almost as if the thought no longer affected her. Maybe it was because she had finally come to terms with the fact that she had been nothing more than Roseanne’s substitute all along. Saying it out loud now didn’t sting the way it used to.
Eden glanced up at her to watch her carefully. She looked unbothered, completely at ease. But if he hadn’t caught that fleeting trace of sadness in her eyes, he might have actually believed that she had let Julian go.
Eden had been by her side for six years. He had watched her grow from a fourteen–year–old prodigy into the woman she
was now.
He had always considered himself a genius, but after meeting Rosalie, he was more than willing to take a step back and play the role of her assistant.
Six
years had passed in the blink of an eye, and geniuses, by nature, were proud and arrogant. Rosalie was no exception.
Yet, for Julian, she had set aside that arrogance, abandoned the pedestal she was born to stand on, and humbled herself just to stay by his side as an ordinary woman, a forgettable wife.
“Rosalie.” Eden suddenly called her name. His voice was steady, but there was a weight to it that made her fingers tighten slightly around her fork.
Eden always called her “Rosa“, but whenever he addressed her “Rosalie” with that particular tone, it meant he was about to say something serious.
Rosalie lifted her gaze and asked, “Yeah?”
Eden hesitated for a second before finally asking, “If Julian really can’t let you go, would you consider getting back with him?”
“Not a chance.” Rosalie didn’t even have to think about it. The answer was immediate, firm, and absolute. “Julian despises me. He’s spent our entire marriage wishing he could throw me as far away as possible. Why would he suddenly come back to me?”
It had taken her an entire lifetime to truly accept that reality, but at least in this life, she wasn’t too late.
Eden dropped his usual playful demeanor. His gaze locked onto hers, steady and serious, and he asked again, “I said, what
if?”
Rosalie’s fingers clenched a little tighter around the fork. The casual indifference on her face slowly faded, replaced by silence.

A long pause stretched between them before she finally spoke, “No, I’ll never get back with him.”
She looked at Eden, blinked away the sting behind her eyes, and reaffirmed her decision. “Eddie, I’m tired. I’m exhausted over the past year of being married to Julian.”
And that wasn’t even counting her previous life.

She added, “I spent so many nights waiting for him to come home. From fully awake to barely keeping my eyes open, he never showed up. I wanted to talk to him, but somehow, that was even harder than making a breakthrough in my research.”
She let out a breath, her voice laced with something between regret and relief. “If I had known loving him would be this painful, I would have let go a long time ago.”
