Chapter 5
I stared in disbelief at the man standing before her.
“I can’t believe you’e here?”
“Hearing your call yesterday,” he said calmly. “I could tell something was wrong. I’m glad I came–or I wouldn’t have known you were being bullied like this.”
Wade was the first to react and pointed at my dad, “Who are you? Who are you to say null and void.”
Trevor wasn’t far behind, his tone just as confrontational. “This is our investment! We’ve already got everything well. How dare you show up and ruin it?”
He shot an impatient look at me. “It’s you bring him here, right?”
The sheer irony of his words made me laugh bitterly. I stopped my father from saying any more.
“Let’s go.”
My father met my gaze, understanding the unspoken meaning, and nodded. Then we left without saying anything.
Just the moment after we left, Freya’s voice rose in a mocking tone. “Wade, what do you think Aurora’s relationship to that older man?”
Before they could speculate further, Wade and Trevor’s phones began ringing in quick succession. The irritated looks on their faces turned to panic as they answered. One call after another confirmed the same thing: their investments were being pulled.
I hadn’t left far before the phone rang as well.
“Aurora,” Wade’s voice roared through the line, “what’s going on? Did you sabotage us? All the investments are gone. Don’t tell me you had nothing to do with this!”
I just replied coldly, “Didn’t you say that these investments were all thanks to Luxway’s reputation and had nothing to do with me? So why are you blaming me now?”
I paused for a beat before continuing, “Didn’t you hand the contracts over to your college–educated Freya? I’m sure she’s more capable than someone like me who didn’t even finish university.”

And, just remind you guys, you kicked me out of the company. This is no longer my problem.”
On the other end, I could hear Wade and Trevor murmuring soothing words to Freya. Even now, they couldn’t stop coddling her.
Freya said aggressively, “If it wasn’t for me, Aurora wouldn’t have left or done this to the company. It’s all my fault. But Aurora was too kind to do that. Maybe it’s up to that man?”
Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. “That older man… Do you think A–Aurora might have… slept with him to get such a massive investment?”
I just laughed out. Even now, Freya couldn’t resist destroying my reputation.
Getting those investments from my father for them really was too generous,” I thought, taking a deep breath to calm myself. Finally, I said aloud, “The company has nothing to do with me, you guys figure it out yourselves.”
Without waiting for a reply, i hung up. Wade and Trevor’s furious shouts echoed faintly through the receiver before I blocked their numbers. Toxic people like them should’ve been cut out of my life
long ago.
My father’s concerned gaze softened as he looked at me. “You gave them everything, and they still treated you like this. Some people just don’t understand gratitude until it’s too late.”
He placed a hand on my shoulder, his tone both proud and encouraging. “Go, go home, Aurora and inherit the family business. Let them see what real regret feels like.”
I smiled and hugged my dad. For the first time, I felt what family members are.
