Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When the crash happened, Camden used his body as a shield, protecting me from harm.
But when he woke up, his memory had stopped at eighteen–when his girlfriend wat Ivy Hayes,
Camden’s buddy told me to let go and give them a chance.
He said only around Ivy would Camden, the perfect student, step down from his pedestal and actually show emotions.
With me, the good girl, his life was boring and dull.
But nobody knew that during those summer days filled with cicada songs, this good girl had fallen for the perfect student, year after year.
So I stubbornly waited for Camden to remember me.
Until three years later, when I was diagnosed with cancer.
That same day, I discovered the surprise he’d been preparing for me before the accident.
I finally found peace and signed the divorce papers he handed me once again.
Walking out of the hospital, I headed straight to the movie theater.
The manager was already waiting for me at the entrance.
“Sorry about this, Miss Carter. Mr. Shaw left this tape with us three years ago, right before his accident.”
“After the crash, the tape just… disappeared. That was totally our bad.”
I waved it off, letting him know it was fine, and followed him into the screening room.
Once I sat down, the lights dimmed.
Then the most familiar face appeared on the big screen.
“Mia, today’s our fifth wedding anniversary.”
Those warm eyes looked right at me through the screen.
“I’m not usually the shy type, but with you… I can never find the right words.”
Even through the camera, I could see his ears turning red from embarrassment.
“We’ve known each other forever, but it took us so long to fall in love…”
“Please forgive me for being so clueless back then. Please accept this love that’s way overdue.”
The video ended, but I couldn’t snap out of it.
So this was his surprise from three years ago–a/love confession.
The day before our anniversary, he’d cleared his whole schedule to take me camping.
Coming down the mountain the next day, Camden told me he had a surprise waiting.
But we never made it down. Some idiot driving the wrong way forced our car right off the cliff.
In those split seconds, Camden unbuckled his seatbelt and wrapped his body around mine.

I walked away without a scratch. Ile nearly died three Umes coming to close to death door.
The screen froze on Camden’s face, and I couldn’t look away.
“You thimmy, of course I knew you loved me.”
Because even before you loved me, I’d been loving you for so, so long already.
When the lights came up. I finally pulled myself out of the memory.
Walking out of the theater, I ran into Camden’s best friend, Dylan Cross. My good mood instantly evaporated.
“Miss Carter.”
He came over to say hi.
I nodded back and immediately turned to leave.
But he called after me:
“Miss Carter, if you really care about Camden, just let him be with Ivy.”
Three years of hearing this same crap. I was so over it.
What gave him the right to tell me what to do?
Who was he to judge what Camden and I had together?
Thankfully, the manager came running out, breaking the tension.
“Miss Carter, here’s the original tape. You should probably keep it safe.”
I took the bag and walked away.
I didn’t catch whatever Dylan was saying to the manager behind me.
By the time I got home, it was already dark. Camden was waiting in the living room.
I knew what was coming–another divorce agreement.
The usual refusal was right there on my tongue, but I stopped myself.
The man in the video and the man in front of me slowly merged together. I looked up, meeting his eyes, and the question just slipped out:
“Camden, if I really signed those divorce papers, would that make you happy?”
